SONGS OF SAIL 2001 presented by The Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine on Friday & Saturday, June 15 & 16. Featured performers include Celeste Bernardo, Marc Bernier, Ellen Cohn, Compass Rose, Martin Hugill, Louis Killen, Forebitter, Don Seneti, Ken Sweeney, Jeff Warner, and Bob Webb for evening concerts in the newly restored Kennebunk Town Hall; Saturday afternoon sing-a-longs at Arundel Wharf and Federal Jack's, great restaurants in Kennebunkport, or sailing with singers aboard the schooner Eleanor. For more information call 207-985-4802 or access website: www.brickstoremuseum.org

Them Joe Clones is hard at work. Now who's gonna belly up to the bar and belt out some songs Saturday afternoon, or warm the seats for the evening concerts?

I plan to be there and can't wait to be back in my old stomping grounds for the first time in a long time. Hope the weather is good for sailing.

I started a thread on it, but for those who aren't looking elsewhere, Martin Hugill will be doing a concert the day after the festival -- Sunday, June 17 at 1:30 p.m. -- at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, only about 30 miles from Kennebunk.

Well, I finally made my reservations. The restaurant sing-a-longs, 1 to 4 PM Saturday, are indeed FREE. I think Brett, Nor and Dick are all going to be there from Roll & Go; the women members seem to be wimping out.

Charley and I are talking of the women members of Roll & Go. They seem to think there are other things in the world besides folk music...

Not wimpy! (Tho not a member of Roll & Go.) Hey, I announced the festival in the first place. Of course 'Mudge and I will be there. (Saturday at least -- have to hold down the fort at the Press Room Friday night.)

Well, that makes about six singers coming. That's probably two more than last year. Anyone else willing to belly up to the bar and belt out a forebitter or two. By the way the restaurant Federal Jack's is one of the Shipyard Ale brew pubs; they do great ales:

The last came in was the bosun mate,
Drinking twice as fast for he come in late,
When Shipyard Ale was new, me boys,
When Shipyard Ale was new!

Roll & Go folks are sheeting home for Federal Jack's at 1 pm. However, you really can't lose. Of course your car might be towed away, but we've got a song for that too:

To me way, hey, haul 'em-away!
The parking lot pirates are we!
From the Hill to the Ferry,
There's none that's so hairy,
And we always collect our fee!
To me way, hey, haul 'em-away!
We plunder the streets of your town!
Be it Edsel or Chevy,
There's no car too heavy,
And no one can make us shut down!

Bat Goddess, you're up for answering April's question though my understanding is that you just have to fit in wherever you can.

Go through Dock Square onto Ocean Ave. Arundel Wharf is on your right, but it's been too long for me to give you distance. If you hit the ocean, you've gone too far. They've got their own car park. BTW, that's where Curmudgeon and I will be hanging out. (The patio, not the car park!)

It's probably a good idea to stop at The Brick Store Museum up in Kennebunk beforehand to pick up schedule, etc. and take care of tickets to the concert.

I was there with most of the other member of Roll & Go and Jeri joined us about half way through the afternoon. We had a great time. Picture this. It was a beautiful warm day with blue skies defined by an occasional puffy cloud. We sat on a covered deck overlooking a boatyard and the water. An attentive waiter was on hand to serve us beverages and food. As we whiled away the hours various performers came to entertain us. The afternoon was pretty near perfect.

After the workshops Charley Noble, Jeri, and I joined Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon on the deck at Federal Jack's where we swilled down various beverages, nibbled on a variety of delicious foods, served by the same waiter (Oh! Back again?), and sang songs amongst ourselves.

Later we went up to the Kennebunk town hall for the concert. There was quite a line up for that. Martin Hugill, Louis Killen, Compass Rose, Don Sineti, Jeff Warner, Forebitter, Celeste Bernardo, Ellen Cohn, and our own Marc Bernier. Allison _?_ of the Johnson Girls was there as well though she was not on the program. They fitted her in and she made a great addition. The acoustics in the hall were not very good but that didn't matter. They had a decent crowd and we managed to fill that hall with sound. They even let Don sing with a microphone. For those who don't know Don I have, in the past, described him as looking like a refrigerator on which someone has stuck a head and filled the body with double bass woofers and amplifiers. That man can generate some sound. He is charismatic and loved by one and all.

...and though Jeri spent her time at Arundel Warf trying to scrunch into every bit of shade available, she still got sunburned. (The effects weren't too bad except she is now talking in the 3rd person.)

Alison Kelley, Naemie. And I saw Ken Schatz there during the day, but he stayed quietly in the background. (Well, other than adding some nice bass harmonies on choruses.)

Nice to see Karen K there. Wish I'd had more time to talk, but I was either trying to find shade or listening to music. There will be more "down time" at Old Songs.

I later migrated to Federal Jack's, where there was shade and comfortable seating. Thanks to Roll & Go for inviting me to their 'designated' chorus table.

What Naemanson didn't mention was the march through the tourist-filled town after the day's program. (Had to go back to the Wharf to re-claim cars.) Charlie instigated an impromptu shanty sing through the town

Brett, I suspect they had Don's mic turned off.

There were about twice as many people there this year as last, and I hope it continues to grow next year.

Great day! Curmudgeon and I sat at the bar on the Arundel Wharf deck, getting sunburned while singing and having an overworked waiter/bartender person not be too interested in refreshing our beers (which, actually, did not match the selection at Federal Jack's, ah well). Pity there wasn't a water shuttle between the two venues! (For the performers' convenience as well as for ours!) But the weather was certainly more comfortable in Kennebunkport than even 5 miles up the river in Kennebunk! Great place to spend the day!

Really glad we had the 3 and a half hours or so between the afternoon music and the concert -- we had a grand time talking and singing on the deck at Federal Jack's. (And drinking beer and eating some lovely snackifications. (Okay, so I didn't really NEED the tiramisu!)

The acoustics in the renovated Town Hall could have been better -- sound bounced off everything. Hope they get some absorbant stuff in there before next year. Naemanson, you forgot Ken Sweeney and Bob Webb. Wish Celeste Bernardo had sung more. (Oh, wish Lou Killen had sung more...and I get to hear more of Martin Hugill today at 1:30 at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH -- he's a treat!)

The Brick Store Museum staff deserve credit for producing this Songs of Sail Festival. It's really a hard job to pull together all the peformers, performer support services, and financial sponsorship. Roll & Go members, including Jennifer who did not WIMP out, joined by Jeri provided the essential wall of sound for chorus and refrain, astounding the more contemplative diners on Federal Jack's deck. We in turn were intrigued to see a gray parrot perched on one of the diner's shoulders, who had a taste for banana and French Fries.

I'm going to initiate a new thread for the 4th Sunday evening, 7 PM, Shanty Swaps at the Portland Observatory which begin NEXT SUNDAY. Roll & Go members will lead off but other people are welcome to lead a nautical song, request one, join in on chorus or refrain, or sit there like a bump on a log. The Observatory is the last surviving signal tower on the East Coast, constructed as a tapered wooden octogon back in 1807 to keep track of USO's (unidentified sailing objects). It's a great place to sing or to view the islands of Casco Bay. The Shanty Swaps will continue through September. Please post if you have any questions or are planning to attend.

Here's to Capt'n Moody,
Heave with a will!
Who raised the Portland Ob-servat'ry,
High on Mun-joy Hill.
