Subject: Sea Music Concerts - NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 17 Jun 01 - 09:12 PM Just a fast note for those in, near or passing through New York City to say that the Tuesday evening Sea Music Concerts at South Street Seaport Museum in Manhattan have moved to a NEW LOCATION. Because of scheduling conflicts on Peking and on the pier, The New York Packet and guests are moving to the museum's new BEEKMAN ANNEX at 219 Water Street. Where is it? One block North of Fulton Street just past the Whitman and Melville Galleries or, to put it in a more mundane way, on the corner just behind Wendy's. Driving from out-of-town? Take the FDR Drive to the South Street exit. The new space is not without its benefits. We will have shelter from potential storms, on-site M/F toilet facilities and GREAT ACCOUSTICS! There will be no change to the concert schedule. Each evening features the museum's official sea music group, The New York Packet, with the following Spotlight Guests... June 19 - Bonnie & Dan Milner - husband and wife team with a distinct blend of Irish immigrant and maritime songs June 26 - Spindrift - shanties, tunes and great fun from from Long Island's East End July 3 - No Concert July 10 - Mark Maniak - folk songs of New York State and the port of New York July 17 - The Fulton Ferry Amblers - banjo, fiddle, dulcimer with sea-related songs from the Appalachians to Scotland July 24 - Jerry Epstein - concertina whiz with a great store of maritime and lumbering songs July 31 - Anne Price - a lovely voice with ballads ancient and modern The series ends August 28th. Donation $3. Concerts start at 6PM sharp each Tuesday except July 3rd.

Subject: RE: Sea Music Concerts - NYC From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Jun 01 - 07:39 AM Thanks for the info. Is this gathering a strictly concert format or is there an "open" song swap section? |

Subject: RE: Sea Music Concerts - NYC From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Jun 01 - 09:57 AM Dan, I think I've got it. The evening starts out at 6 PM with a concert, followed by 2 & 3 at the same place, and then shifts to another nearby place for 4. Is it reasonable to assume that Open Sing begins about 9 PM? Is Open Sing more of a free-for-all assertive format, mechanical take-your-turn, or does it vary by the evening? Are instruments welcome or particular ones forbidden? Are there typically a lot of non-singers there? It sounds like it could be fun for newcomers but, you know, this is NYC and I'm not sure what assumptions should be made. |

Subject: RE: Sea Music Concerts - NYC From: dick greenhaus Date: 20 Jun 01 - 10:28 AM WEll, I attended last night's event, and it was a blast. Dan and Bonnie Milner did a lovely set, and the rest of New York Packet was enthusiastic and competent---all in all a fine evening. A highly recommended way to spend an evening and three bucks. |

Subject: RE: Sea Music Concerts - NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 20 Jun 01 - 08:27 PM You're nearly there, Charlie. There's a 2 hour concert. After that just about everybody goes to a bar/restaurant a few blocks away and usually there is an open sing. That part of the evening is truly informal and there are no official restrictions on what can be sung or played. Dick, it was an unexpected pleasure to see you and to help you enjoy your birthday.
All the best,
