Subject: hopefull songs

Hi all

I've been writing (or attempting to ) a fantasy/sci-fi story, about a girl that get's zapped back in time, I know a frequently used theme. The thing is, I want a guy in the 1880's to sing to her at one point (he kinda likes her, I guess you could say) now one of the songs I know and like for this is "simple gifts " (yes, the one I mentioned in the previous thread", however, i want some more romantic and still hopefull songs. I am at a loss, since most of my knowledge about this stuff is dutch, and thus would not fit. Any idea's?

Selene

Umm. Let's see. I know there are some out there, I can't think of any offhand, but I'll look. Heh. Another writer, huh? Let me tell you, this place is wonderful for information. Hope to get back with you soon!

Hopeful? There's a heap of gospel and spiritual songs. But I'd like him to sing her: Green Grow the Rashe's O. It's in the DT. Search with [green grow] Sample:
The warldly race may riches chase
And riches still may fly them, o
And when at last they catch them fast
They still can ne'er enjoy them, o

Green grow the rashes, o
Green grow the rashes, o
Green grow the rashes, o
The sweetest hours that e'er I spent
Were spent among the lasses, o

And if only you could hear Dougie MacLean (or me) sing it. It's really simple, like Silent Night, but demanding a more reasonable (smaller) vocal range. I never knew there were more than three verses until a minute ago when I looked it up :)

That's a good one. I was just about to suggest that! :-) You beat me to it.

Selene - I've been looking for "inspirational" Celtic folk songs and have come up with a few. "Come by the Hills" is in the DT, its tune is traditional but I don't know if the words were around in the 1800s. Maybe someone else in the gang can help with that. I also just found a good English translation of "Caide Sin don te Sin", a traditional song whose message is that people should be able to live their lives in peace. The first verse is:

I went to the market and traded my cow
For five pounds of money and a gold guinea coin
If I drink all the money and the gold I give away
Since it's no-one's concern, then no-one should care

If that sounds appropriate let me know and I'll post the other three verses.

Oh yes, I meant to mention that "Simple Gifts" plays a pivotal role in one of my favorite fantasy books by Mercedes Lackey. There's a battle between the forces of good and evil (in present day California), and a couple of human musicians aid the good elves by playing the flute and singing. "Simple Gifts" is the music that finally wins the battle.

Hi all

jen and rastrelnikov I checked out the Green Grow the Rashe's O, and it looks like it's filling in nicely with a song I had in mind (or the intention,) execpt I'm having trouble understanding someof the words (the older ones I think) like warldly. I looked them up in the dictionary, but I couldn't find them (maybe I'm being unusually dense here-I blame it on being dutch!) The second verse you posted maked sense though, and I like it. Susan-Marie I think that likewise my celtic(?) is a bit rusty, so I do appreciate the translation, hey, if we keep this up, I've only got two more song-slots to fill! i"d really appreciate the other verses though

now, all I need is a song for when the lad is in prison, I've heard one that I like but I'm not sure of the whole text. It goes like "a stranger here, a stranger there a stranger everywhere I'd go home, but brother I'm a stranger there" however, I do not know if this si the begin, end or middle of a song!

Ok, and i need one good-bye-ish song, when the gall's leaving. Thanks again

Selene PS, any names for post-apocalyptic baddies are also welcome, as well as a name for a smart feisty young lady (brunette)

Subject: Lyr Add: A YOUNG MAID STOOD IN HER FATHER'S...^^
From: Alice
Date: 24 Dec 97 - 07:03 PM

I don't know if this fits, but it is an old Irish song.

A YOUNG MAID STOOD IN HER FATHER'S GARDEN

A young maid stood in her father's garden,
Plucking roses all covered with dew,
A stranger came and gazed upon her,
And said, "Fair lady, will you wed with me?"

"It's seven years since I had a sweetheart,
And seven years since I did him see,
And seven more I'll wait upon him,
And if he's alive, he'll come home to me."

"Seven years it is since you had a sweetheart,
And seven more since you did him see,
And seven more you will wait upon him,
And perhaps that young man you ne'er will see."

"If he is sick, I want him better,
If he is dead, I wish him rest,
But if he's alive I will wait for him,
For he's the young man I love the best."

He put a hand into his pocket,
His sinewy hands they were slim and small,
And up between them he pulled a gold ring,
And when she saw it she down did fall.

He took her up and gave her sweet kisses,
And he embraced her so tenderly.
Saying, "I am your true and loving sailor,
That came from sea for to wed with thee.

A YOUNG MAID STOOD IN HER FATHER'S GARDEN - is in the database in a slightly different version with the name A SEAMAN AND HIS LOVE, but I swear I've heard other versions. Isn't there a related Child Ballad?
As for hopeful songs, I could suggest a number of songs by Bill Staines, but those are 20th century songs, so they wouldn't fit Selene's book. Nonetheless, "River" and "Faith of Man" are wonderful songs.
