Subject: program to create dots From: GUEST,Jude L Date: 26 Jun 01 - 09:29 AM Does anyone know of a good program that will help me.I don't sightread music - this is not that I don't understand the theory, just that I am very bad at reading music i.e. I can very slowly and painstakingly work out note by note, what each dot means. This takes me much effort, a very long time and I'm often still not certain by the time that I get to the end that I've remembered the start correctly. I also often hear tunes which I would like to get into the dots to keep for another time or share with those who do read music. With all the stuff that's out there there must be a program suitable to do want I need. If so can anyone tell me what it is? Jude |

Subject: RE: Help: program to create dots From: pavane Date: 26 Jun 01 - 10:04 AM My program HARMONY can probably help - and it is currently free. It can import various text formats, such as abc, and convert to 'dots'. It can also convert simple MIDI files. For learning the dots, it can display the note letters beneath each one, and/or display the different notes in different colours - the kid's method where you stick a coloured sticker on each note of a piano keyboard. You can download it from here |

Subject: RE: Help: program to create dots From: pavane Date: 26 Jun 01 - 10:48 AM By the way, if you have the sheet music, there is (or was) a demonstration version available of MIDISCAN, which will taked scanned tunes and convert to MIDI files. I found that it worked quite well on some published music, but it wasn't very happy with O'Neill's because it was iffy on grace notes. I did accidentally discover the tune used for 'Sorry the day I was married' though, just by scanning and playing it. I haven't actually tried it on the output from my program - I must experiment. |

Subject: RE: Help: program to create dots From: JudeL Date: 28 Jun 01 - 09:35 AM Thanks for all your suggestions I now know that what I want is available and where to get it. I had asked in a couple of shop where responses ranged from incomprehension / if its not on the shelf to five minutes of "condescending male telling me what I SHOULD want (which wasn't what I'd asked for /nor would it do what I wanted). Oh well thank goodness for mudcat! Jude |
