Subject: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: 8_Pints Date: 27 Jun 01 - 07:58 PM We are planning a family holiday in the West of Ireland with, hopefully, plenty of traditional music. We are using our campervan [the Panzer!] and will be quite flexible as to venue. Any suggestions? Thanx 8_Pints & Sue vG |

Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: Sorcha Date: 28 Jun 01 - 12:21 AM Don't book a "tour"......drive yourself. See Connaught, esp. Co. Galway and Co. Mayo. The Aran Islands and other "out of the way" spots.....just my own personal agenda. |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: GUEST,chrisj Date: 28 Jun 01 - 02:06 AM Can't think of any particular reason to agree with john of hull about Dublin. I found it a pretty lively place but not so much of a 'tourist trap' as some larger cities of Europe not far away. Those with an interest in Irish history and who are reasonably fit can steep themselves in it by just walking around - from Viking foundations to the spot where the men of 1916 were executed - its all there and its all relatively low-key. There are few grandiose monuments shouting to be noticed, as befits a country whose people are survivors rather than conquerors. If you go west and south-west you will get a flavour of the Ireland of the mid-twentieth century, of tiny villages straggling along a road and farmhouses and cottages sprinkled every which way around the countryside, often in harshly newer styles that will take some years to blend into the landscape as the older houses do. |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: mooman Date: 28 Jun 01 - 04:23 AM Dear 8 Pints and Sue, I wouldn't know where to begin there are so many wonderful places. I pretty well know every village and town in the West so it could be useful to know whether you plan to go South-West (West Cork/Kerry) West, (Clare, Galway (incl. Connemara and Mayo), or North-West (Sligo, (bit of) Leitrim and Donegal, or whether you want to do the whole damn lot! It's hard to pick out a region as all are different and all are special and beautiful in their own way, but I do have favourite music and other places in each region. For the North, Alison and several others are your best best although I have visited the North several times and it has a special beauty all of its own. If you can give some hints, I'd be pleased to help out. Best regards, mooman P.S. I'll be in Connemara for 2-3 weeks in July and plan to meet up with Mudcatter Sabine in Doolin, Clare, on my way up there from Shannon. |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: Pinetop Slim Date: 28 Jun 01 - 11:25 AM I'd buy everyone in the place a pint if I could but hear Sean Tyrell sing "Sweet Ballyvaughan" in Green's Cafe in Ballyvaughan. |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: Fibula Mattock Date: 28 Jun 01 - 12:40 PM I'm doing a West Coast Crawl in a few weeks time (probably from the 15th July) so if anyone wants to chip in about good sessions between Achill and Dingle (the starting and finishing points) or good campsites, please do! |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: 8_Pints Date: 28 Jun 01 - 04:35 PM Many thanks to all for your suggestions & info. We shall meet up with some friends from the Cotswolds and Derbyshire on arrival, and then toss a coin to decide what direction to venture forth! My personal preference would somewhere like Co. Mayo or Sligo (we visited Kerry some 12 years ago). Our travel dates are 26th July .. 9th August'2001. The opportunity to indulge in a little dinghy sailing would also be greatly appreciated (I have to build up a thirst somehow!) Cheers, Bob vG Will keep you posted on developments .... |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: mooman Date: 28 Jun 01 - 04:36 PM Dear Fibula, Sound like you'll be passing close by us at some stage as we'll be in Connemara for 2 weeks from 14 to 28 July. Perhaps we could fix a session up if you're in the area? I'll have some type of instrument with me for sure! I have a feeling there may be a good campsite or two round about the Killary Harbour (Leenane) and Letterfrack areas but I could check up. PM me if that seems a possibility and we can arrange something! All the best, mooman (ex-mcmoo) |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: mooman Date: 28 Jun 01 - 04:42 PM Dear Bob vG, Okey dokey, I'll have a wee think about that. My family are from Sligo, close to the Mayo border, so it's a part I know quite well. Clew Bay (various centres such as Louisburgh, Westport and Newport) could be possibilities for good dinghy sailing and if I recall correctly there is a centre or two on Achill. Best regards, mooman |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: 8_Pints Date: 28 Jun 01 - 05:05 PM Hi mooman, I look forward to receiving your advice. Regards, Bob vG |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: GUEST,Herge Date: 28 Jun 01 - 05:10 PM Dont go any where near the North between 8th July and the 13th!!!!! I know I live here! Come any other time and you'll love it Herge |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: alison Date: 28 Jun 01 - 10:01 PM Fibula if you are going as far south as Dingle... go a bit further and catch a boat out to Skellig Michael...... I still rave about that place..... it is wonderful..... you need to be reasonably fit to get up all the steps (but I did it with a 6 month old baby round my neck in a sling.... so it can't be too bad!!??)..... but the little monastery at the top is amazing..... Achill is gorgeous....... my two favourite camp sites are at Dugort which is the middle of nowhere... but has a pub, a hotel, a little shop, a mountain and a wonderful beach. There is a site (they are both VERY basic) right in the sand dunes, ... you get wakened by the braying of wild donkeys......and another called "Seal rocks" on the opposite side of the road..... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: alison Date: 28 Jun 01 - 10:29 PM here is another recent thread where many Irish 'catters have named their favourite places and pubs and sessions..... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: Áine Date: 28 Jun 01 - 10:46 PM Dear 8_Pints, 'Into The West', is it? Well, I've only got one word of advice -- Donegal . . . But, if you happen to be passing through Galway, be sure to stop at Kennys Bookshop and tell Des that Áine from Texas says 'hello'! -- then head on down the High Street a couple of blocks where your ears will hear the strains of some excellent traditional music and your nose will smell the best pints in town being poured! Great good luck on your travels, Áine |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: Fibula Mattock Date: 29 Jun 01 - 04:42 AM Thanks for the advice folks. It's been a while since I've "done" the west coast. I used to go on holiday to Dingle every year without fail when I was wee (if we weren't in Donegal) so I'm looking forward to returning. The Other Half was always on holiday in Achill, so that decided our start and finish points. We haven't been for a while though, hence the request for info. alison - I've always wanted to get out to the Skelligs, and to the Blaskets too. Perhaps this time I'll finally get! mooman - whereabouts in Connemara are you going? |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: mooman Date: 29 Jun 01 - 06:17 AM Dear Fibula, I'll be at Glenlosh Valley in the Maamturk Mountains. Not too far from Maam Cross one way and Leenane the other, i.e. more or less in the middle of Connemara between sea and lakes. Probably not much more than about half an hour's drive into Clifden or any other sizeable town or village. Westport too is fairly reachable from there as are Oughterard and Galway. No problem at all for us to travel if a meet up and session are possible at some location! Best regards, mooman |
Subject: RE: Help: Irish Holiday Recommendations From: Fiolar Date: 29 Jun 01 - 06:31 AM Agree with Herge. It might be as well to give the 6 counties a complete miss this time around. Tensions there are likely to be running a little high in the near future with the resignation of Trimble and the recent upsurge of violence in many areas. |
