We thought that too, and I'm not altogether sure Davy sings "Lady Twynford" either. I merely transcribed the words printed on the CD insert. I did make one assumption, which is most likely incorrect. In the last line of the first verse, the insert has "het" before "ale." I thought that was probably a typo, intended to be "the." However, listening again to the track, it sounds like Davy sings "het." As my wife later pointed out to me, that line means that the brandy goes down well in between warm beers("het" being "hot"). I'm a "purist", and getting the words right is extremely important to me. It really helps to "ken" what they mean.

as in "curds and whey" as opposed to the cream

The following words are taken verbatim off the insert to the BFB Rain, Hail, or Shine CD. (as is Matt R's word-for word post of 30-Jun-01 - 10:03 PM, explaining the basis of the song.) I first heard Davy Steele sing it at the Band's gig at the Barns at Wolftrap about 3 years ago. He invited the audience to sing along to the chorus. Great song. Matt R - ya got real close in your translation. I've got my guid missus looking over my "shoder" (she's frae Scotland) and she assures me these are the proper words.

CS - If you ever make it to your ancestral land (Scotland or Ireland[?] - I assume it's one or t'other, judging by your chosen handle) you'll feel the sense of beloning right off the bat. I spent 9 years in Scotland, and for me, leaving was the hardest damn thing I've ever had to do. I'm American Scots/Irish (mostly Scots). Never felt more at home ANY PLACE else in my life, including my hometown in Michigan. Hope you can get there someday.

The basis of this song [Heave Ya Ho] was sung to Davy by Bobby Copeland, an old oyster fisherman from Prestonpans, a small town on the Firth of Forth. Davy made the tune and incorporated as many of Bobby's words as he could remember. The oystermen fished in two rowing boats, heading parallell to each other, and the shoreline, dragging (or dreggin) a weighted net between them. The songs would keep the rowers, and therefore the boats, in time with each other. The songs were generally impromptu affairs, and could be fairly gossipy. 'The Whale', by the way, was a fisherman's pub in 'the Pans'.

There is an Open Mic at Tiffany's Tavern in Old Town Alexandria that runs Mon thru Thursday ... Just checked it out last week and there's room for more ... Come on down!

A check through the threads suggest that the song you want is Davey Steel's "Heave Ya Ho", from Battlefield's "Rain, Hail and Shine" album, no words turned up on the thread though, mabye this time.
The album is just a couple of years old at most, second last one Davey made I think, so someone should have it.

The version I heard was done by a group named "The Battlefield Band.

The name of the song may very well not be "Heave Yo Ho". A friend of mine had it on a home made tape, and he called it that, but that may be his name for it and not what it is known by to the world at large.

No, not Mingulay Boat Song, but the sound is similar. The version I heard was sung by a man with a fairly thick Scots accent, so it was difficult to make out much of what he said. It had a similar feel to that piece though, but more heavily celtic.
