Subject: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: Helen Date: 01 Jul 01 - 06:47 PM Hi,
I was just surfing around the MIDI sites as usual, looking for Chinese breakdown, and found a really good site called http://www.homestead.com/hetzler/music_2.html The best thing about it is that the MIDIs are not computer generated - they seem to be based on real fiddle playing with all those lovely fiddle effects which make a tune really special. Worth checking out. Helen |

Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: GUEST,petr Date: 10 Jul 01 - 08:37 PM thanks Helen that is a great site, although it does seem to be midi to me and not real fiddle, (I guess that might take a bit of memory to do that, but for a lot of old time music, the particular bow shuffle is really key to making the sound.) Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: GUEST,ehetzler@shore.net Date: 11 Jul 01 - 06:42 AM Thanks for the nice comments about my Site. The tunes are computer generated MIDI. However, I have been playing fiddle for 16 years so I have tried to emulate real playing as much as possible. I continually update these files as my skill at creating MIDI files improves. |

Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: Helen Date: 11 Jul 01 - 09:26 AM Hullo! And welcome, Guest! What a surprise to see you here. A very nice surprise, because I almost e-mailed you today to tell you how much I like your site. I'm not a fiddle player but I love listening to fiddle music, and your MIDIs really do sound like real fiddle music. Helen |

Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: wysiwyg Date: 11 Jul 01 - 10:27 AM An oh yeah. I wanted to say how we anticipate using the site at our house, where my husband is the fiddler. Of course first there will be his own learning. But we jam with people who live fairly far away. Some are note readers, some aren't. With your resources, we can e-mail them a link and say, "OK, next month let's try THIS one...." and then when we get together people will have some fraction of a clue where the piece is going, and we can make it our own and start plugging these items into the sets we do here and there. Recent additions to our printed music include Bonnie Rideout's CD and book and then there is a nice book of ancient celtic fiddle tunes I can't recall the title for. I know your site focuses on old-timey, but I bet we will find some overlap as we work through those materials as well. I am also going to find the material useful as I work up hymn arrangements-- to listen to a lot of the MIDIs and get the sound of them in my head-- it will help us adapt a lot of material into a style that leans on old-time, because that is the sound emerging from our Saturday Night service we do weekly, acoustically. So anyhow, I just wnated to let you know that not only is your site wonderful and wonderfully simple in operation and layout, it can have a wide variety of applications and can impact a large number of people in a powerful way. As soon as our new computer arrives I will be "there" quite a bit, and I look forward to seeing the increase in my husband's enjoyment of the process of learning new tunes and new approaches to them. ~Susan CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SITE. |

Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: GUEST,petr Date: 11 Jul 01 - 04:23 PM I would say if you are a beginning old time fiddle player Bruce Molsky has a few learning cds including one where he plays the tune slowly and then at regular speed also Brad Leftwich. Both of them were at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes at Port Townsend washington last week. I highly recommend this fiddle festival/workshop its a blast. Petr |

Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: Ditchdweller Date: 11 Jul 01 - 04:34 PM Agreed! An excellent site!! My 12yo is a promising fiddler and I have downloaded a lot of midis from various sites. Using a programme like MidiNotate it is possible to print out the score for him to try. He is now reaching the stage where he will benefit greatly from playing with other people. |

Subject: RE: Website: Fiddle/Old Time Music MIDIs From: Skipjack K8 Date: 10 Aug 01 - 02:44 PM That's brill, ehetzler! I just sawed four tunes, and I've only taken up the fiddle a couple of months back. You get good spirit out of the computer, 16 years of fiddle playing certainly shines through. And thanks, Helen, too. It's bookmarked, and about to be consumed into Cakewalk, bodily. Skipjack |
