Hello All you south-west english, I remember a song, which I think comes from Somerset or around the south-west of England. I have heard it sung here in the north of Ireland. I am almost sure it is called"Jim the Carter Lad". Slan Ard Mhacha.

Ian. Good on you, you`ll never believe it but this sing was sung by an old friend long since gone.He was always asked to give it a belt when we travelled on our Gaelic Football away games, it was more to please him than listen to the song. Still it brings back happy memories and oul DB smiling all over his face as he became the star of the show. Now how this song made its way across to the north of Ireland is a mystery. Thanks again Ian and let us lay down the pitchforks. Slan Ard Mhacha.

When a lad myself in the 50s, I frequently heard this song, either on "Listen with Mother' or on BBC Children's Hour; it was rendered as JIMMY the Carter's Lad.

O dear not on Yorkshire folk song db ~ the Holmfirth version and also in Paul Davenport's Songs of the Ridings

JOE THE CARRIER'S LAD

My name is Joe the Carrier's Lad a merry chap am I
I always am contented be the weather wet or dry
I snap my fingers at the frost I whistle at the rain
There's none can lead a jollier life than Joe the Carrier's Lad

CHORUS
Crack crack goes me whip I whistle and I sing
I sit upon me wagon I'm as happy as a king
My horse is always willing and I am never sad
There's none can lead jollier life than, Joe the Carrier's lad

Me father was a Carrier at 20 years ago
On Thursdays to the Market almost regular he would go
Sometimes he'd take me with him, particular in the Spring
And there I'd sit upon the box and hear my father sing

The girls they all do smile at me as I go driving past
Me horse he is a beauty as he trots along so fast
And many's the mile we've put behind and happy days we've had
There's none can lead a jollier life than Joe the Carrier's Lad

I never think of politics or anything so great
I care not for their highbred talk about the church and state
But I act aright as man to man and that what makes me glad
You'll find there beats an honest heart in Joe the Carrier's lad

*You will that the word Gay has been omitted as this is no longer pc!

Some differences will no doubt be in place to Jim the Carter's lad and do have an old vinyl record of "Tom Forrest" of the Archer radio programme singing JTCL (Jim) backed by The Yetties
