In the key of C, it would be: e e (12 3) g a (12 3) c g, (12 3) a, c (1 23). Ever hopeful, Sheila. Another way to write the melody would be 3 3/ 5 6/ 1 5,/ 6/1. Am I making any sense? |

M=meter? Q=? K=key? Letters=notes. numbers=beat value? Small c (if key=C)= "do?" I agree, last E should =6 if not 12. It's all repeated with the final note on "do." What are all those red numbers in columns? Is there a guide for computer dummies in plain SIMPLE English??? Ever hopeful, Sheila |

Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:00 PM Sheila - if you go the the Newcomers guide and FAQ - (top thread on the forum page - it will link you to stuff about the ABC format. it is a good way to transmit tunes in text (up to a certain complexity) theres lots of other stuff in there as well. *grin* even (some of ) those of us who have been around quite a while admit to using it as a reference the red stuff is miditxt - which is a way for us to transmit midi files via text messages - and the link that is built in will explain how to use it. I don't think anyone can really "read" the miditxt. |

With the first he gives, beside John MacLean's Gaelic, the text of Burns' Ae Fond Kiss. Ossian recorded the song with that melody, though they finished on a rather than f (as in your example, given that mine is in f and yours in c), giving it a more melancholy feel. Ossian was a Scottish band, active originally in the '70s and 80s; Ae Fond Kiss, the tune of which I suspect you would recognise straight away if you heard it (it's very slow, and ends on an unresolved note as I described), was on their first album, Ossian (Springthyme SPR 1004, 1977); it's available now on CD, and the band itself is back together and working again. Presumably, then, it was an instrumental version of the melody that you heard? The tune, in various forms, is as I said used for a number of songs in Scotland and Ireland, for example: Ae Fond Kiss The tune given with the file is the one Burns set it to, Rory Dall's Port, which, though it seems to be related, is not quite the one that we're talking about. Donal Og Text; one of a number of translations into English. Donal Og A midi of one version of the tune. Hi [H]Oro 'S Na Horo Eile Text only, but it goes with the tune I linked to in my last message. All this doesn't tell you where you heard the thing, of course, but it may help someone else to put their finger on a film, or whatever. You set off a light bulb, Malcolm, and I dug up a tape I made a few years ago from a 1959 Scottish Broadcasting Co. tribute to Robt. Burns, "Immortal Memory" which was aired by Robert Sherman on "Woody's Children." There it was, "Ae Fond Kiss" sung by either Kenneth McKellor, Ian Wallace, Peter Mellon or Alistair McCard. Are these well-known Scottish singers? I still don't know the melody, probably it is "Hi Horo..." but I will explore that Ossian CD. Thank you again and again. Sheila |

I heard it first from Bobby Eaglesham with 5 Hand Reel. Any chance of submitting this (Hi Oro 'S Na Horo Eile) to the DT, to add to Ae Fond Kiss as an alternative tune to Rory Dall's Port? |
