I have an unreleased vinyl LP of Otis Spann- Title:- Cracked Spanner Head, this was given to me 30 years ago when I ran a folk-club. Does anybody know if it is collectable i.e. valuable?

Jock

I don't know anything about value of collectibles but I sure like Otis Spann's piano playing.

Is one of the songs on it go something like "take ninety nine, nine, nine, nine (2x), you can buy the blues only for a dollar & a quarter"? I can remember seeing him in Boston at the Ark in the mid maybe late 60's & for some reason, in my mind I have him sharing the bill with Victoria Speevy (sp?). That LP was to me was a priceless gem. Thanks, I guess it couldn't have been her? Who ever it was she was great. Barry

Barry,

It could have been Victoria Spivey, she made a come back in 1960 and started her own record label in 1962, so she might well have shared a bill with Otis Spann in the mid sixties.

Jock,

Even 'collectible' albums are rarely worth enough to make it worth parting with them, especially if you like the music (which is, of course, the real value!).

When I was young, I learned everything I knew then about blues piano playing from listening to Otis Spann and Nicky Hopkins. Good mentors for sure.

I guess it could've been her. I shouldn't post that early in the morning & I don't why I can't read or do the correct math then either. I just shouldn't post until the night before instead of the morning after. Barry

Giok,

Although it is subject to the whims of bidders, whenever I want to get some kind of idea if something is collectible, I check http://www.ebay to see if anything similar is at auction.

Checking on Spann, there were a few that came up. One was an LP from 1965, someone in England has it, but started the bidding fairly high and no one has bid on it, so I usually take that as a fair indication that everyone is waiting until the last minute, or it is priced too high to begin with.

If you get to the right people, they'll pay for what they want. To sell it, you need to advertise it in a postal auction in the right magazine (there's one in England called Record Collector) - I'm sure someone will give you better advice if you start a thread with a more appropriate title. I would guess that it would be worth money if it was never released, but I would also guess that it has by now been released by someone entrepreneurial on CD, so you really need to make contact with the vinyl nuts.
