Subject: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: Naemanson Date: 10 Jul 01 - 07:13 AM This foolish thread is being presented by a proud parent. This week my daughter got her financial aid package for her junior year and they have increased it dramatically. My share is low enough that I might be able to afford to feed myself more than mac and cheese this winter. And I may be able to send her some pocket money while she is in England this fall and make some progress on saving for the next one to go to school. Well, maybe it will still be mac and cheese after all. But I should also be able to make it to the FSGW Getaway. Life is good! |

Subject: RE: BS: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: GeorgeH Date: 10 Jul 01 - 07:36 AM Congratulations to your daughter . . and relish your pride in her. Remember . . the chances are "society" will THOROUGHLY reap the benefits of the financial aid package, so don't feel beholden to anyone!! So - what's she doing in England and does she need any contacts over here? There's a few Mudcatters in that land . . G. |

Subject: RE: BS: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: bbc Date: 10 Jul 01 - 08:03 AM I am thankful for the aid David is receiving, but we are still responsible for at least $22,000 a year & are wondering where it will come from. When did college get to be so expensive & does it really need to be? bbc |

Subject: RE: BS: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: Whistle Stop Date: 10 Jul 01 - 08:44 AM Another proud parent here. My daughter (oldest of three kids) heads off to her freshman year at Tulane University next month, with the benefit of a $16,000 academic scholarship. Doesn't cover the whole cost by a long shot (doesn't even cover half, actually), but it sure makes a difference. College got so expensive when, and because, society bought into the fallacy that it's the only way to get educated and/or get a decent job. It is neither, but the notion that "you have to go to college, spend whatever they charge, take whatever courses they require, etc." is so firmly ingrained that it is hardly questioned these days. And, while there is some level of competition among the various colleges out there, collectively the college industry benefits from the perception that it's the only route to a fulfilling life. Still, I'm proud of my daughter, and think she will do well. |

Subject: RE: BS: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 10 Jul 01 - 09:00 AM Just an extra hint here...my kids worked as dorm counselors (like I did) and saved tons of money. If they pursue this as Freshmen they can get the jump on others who haven't heard about it yet. Congrats! I remember a college orientation meeting where the leader made a comment that when his daughter graduated college, it was the nicest raise he'd ever received. All the parents laughed, and all the kids looked puzzled. |

Subject: RE: BS: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: Naemanson Date: 12 Jul 01 - 11:27 AM Huh? Did you suddenly come into big money, Mary? When can I expect delivery? Should I start taking navigation classes so I can sail her home from some foreign port? |

Subject: RE: BS: Celebrating college finanacial aid! From: Naemanson Date: 12 Jul 01 - 11:30 AM I mean, after all, I MAY be able to eat better than mac & cheese this next semester. I have no guarantees of this. So I can't see me buying a sailboat until these kids are well and truly launched. |
