Subject: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: marty D Date: 13 Jul 01 - 01:45 PM Recently I had the non-pleasure to stay at several Holiday Inns, and their advertising is correct, 'no surprises'. I did once see an absolutely amazing guitarist playing in one of their lounges. Sadly I can't remember his name or even where the Holiday Inn was -it may have been Detroit. It certainly got me to thinking that maybe an awful lot of wonderful musicians languish their lives away in this kind of (well payed, I guess) obscurity. I'm not kidding about this guy. He was about thirty, played bluegrass, folk, classical etc. all backed up by a recorded bass track. Anyone else see any gems in the hotel chains? marty |

Subject: RE: Help: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: JenEllen Date: 13 Jul 01 - 02:04 PM Oh yeah. I was in a hotel lobby waiting on some friends recently, and heard this fantastic blues guitar coming from the bar. Stuck my head in to see this guy. Wayland Chapman. Wow, all I can say. Got to talking to him during a break. He owns a limo service in town and drives during the day, and plays music at night. Despite relative obscurity, he is a very, very happy man. You can't wish them anything but the best. ~JenEllen |

Subject: RE: Help: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: DonMeixner Date: 14 Jul 01 - 10:19 AM Every now and then The Holiday Inn in Auburn New York lapses into good sense and has a good performer in their pub venue. I have seen Pat Kane there a number of times. I have also seen Parnell and Boru there. Twice they have even hired The Flyin' Column, go figure. Don |

Subject: RE: Help: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 Jul 01 - 01:34 PM Hell YES Marty! There are many superbly talented musicians who: Get married early. Have kids and feel a responsibility to be THERE with them. Are living in areas without a music "scene" Are not driven to seek "fame". You'll find quite a few of those types playing at Holiday Inns.....along with "Showbands" playing "Feelings" to travelling salesmen. One question. How many "Famous" folky musicians would be famous if they hadn't gone to New York, London, LA, Chicago, Boston etc.? Some, but not the majority. Rick |

Subject: RE: Help: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 14 Jul 01 - 02:20 PM Well, for a year or so, two of Atlantic Canada's finest musicians, Dwayne Coté and Dave MacIsaac, whiled away their Thursday evenings in the lounge at the Holiday Inn in Halifax. It was great, but I had other things on Thursdays, so only got to a few of them. It was billed as a session, so others might show up and play as well. Good stuff. |

Subject: RE: Help: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: mouldy Date: 15 Jul 01 - 03:24 AM Hmmph! You won't find anything like that here in the UK. I will be staying 2 nights in the Holiday Inn Express at Cardiff Gate on the M4 this week, and I bet there won't be a sniff of a decent musician. It's just a dormitory for sales reps, as far as I know. Andrea |

Subject: RE: Help: Great Music in a...Holiday Inn? From: pavane Date: 15 Jul 01 - 03:41 AM Well I am working at Cardiff Gate - maybe I could come along and squeeze a box! Don't know if that rates as decent music though. |
