Subject: Lyr Req: Great fighting bulldog
From: Edmund
Date: 14 Jul 01 - 10:01 PM

My Dad sang about a great fighting bulldog perhaps 60 years ago (and he only seemed to know fragments)It went something like this:

Oh gentlemen he was a dandy
He weighed around 29 pounds (59?)
He was a great fighting bulldog
And he licked them for (30 - 40 ?) miles round.

Then I offed with me coat and me hat
Sailed into the whole Murphy faction
???????? From old Mike down to little Pat

That's the best I can remembrer it .... does it ring a bell for anyone? Thanks ..... Edmund

Thanks for trying, Sorcha. Before I posted I tried Copernic, which searches a dozen search engines at the same time, and I struck out too.
I'm pinning my hopes on the Irish Mudcat contingent as I am pretty sure that is where it originated.

Try looking for 'Champion, He was a dandy', or 'Twenty Ponnd Dog'. I recall a chorus going..... 'Champion he was a dandy 'Til Murphy the dirty old hog Came along with his black and tan terrier And murdered my twenty pound dog.

I'm fairly sure that Bob Davenport used to sing it. The tune id similar to 'Dick Darby, The Cobbler' Hope this helps.

Hi Burl! Yes it was Bob. Edmund, try a forum search under "Champion", I seem to remember posting the words some time ago.
