Tune Req: The Red Admiral Butterfly

Has anyone here ever heard this song. I assume it is an old irish dance tune, but can't find it in any of my books (I have thousands of tunes there) so I thought maybe it was a song. My cousin asked if I could get the sheet music for it, but he has never heard it either so we both are just kind of scrambling around on this puzzle. If you have even just heard, please email me so I can know a little about what it is. Also if anyone can recommend a CD, or somewhere where it might be located, I could pass that info along to the interested party.

Eric, "Butterfly" is a pretty well known Irish tune, but I have never heard of "The Red Admiral Butterfly". From what source did your cousin get the title? Alice in MT

Hi

They are one and the same. The Chieftains do a version called "Red admiral butterfly." It's on a Cd called "James Galway and the Chieftains in Ireland."(Rd85798) The Butterfly performed by Orison (lovely arrangement) is on a CD called Celtic Odyssey from Narada.(ND-63912.)

On a barely related subject, Vladimir Nabokov, the lepidopterist and great writer, was fond of this butterfly and also fond of claiming that its true name was "Red Admirable". Does anyone know any evidence for that claim?

We used to have them at home (belfast), and we always knew them as red admirals.
