Subject: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Naemanson Date: 27 Jul 01 - 02:01 PM Believe it or not this is music related! (Kinda) I'll be the first one to say I HATE uniforms. But my membership in Roll & Go depends on wearing one of those cute striped shirts and a bandanna. Click here to see what I mean. My problem is finding these shirts large enough to fit me. I need a triple extra large to be comfortable. What to do? Call in the Mudcat Shopping Brigade. Your task is to look around your neck of the woods and find me a XXXL striped T-shirt, with either short or long sleeves. My price range is $20 to $30. |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Naemanson Date: 27 Jul 01 - 02:05 PM You can PM me when you find one of these elusive beasties. Thanks for all your help. Consider, we have a three day gig at an arts festival the weekend after next and have only one shirt to wear. I have to go home every evening and wash it and dry it for the next day! I know I cannot get another one for this season but it would be nice to have one or two extras for next year. |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Manitas Date: 27 Jul 01 - 04:27 PM Ther's a company over here called the Breton Shirt company. I was in a band that wore them with berets. They may have a website. |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: SINSULL Date: 27 Jul 01 - 04:34 PM Try BIG At HEART. com. If they don't have stripes (they go to Size 10X, I believe), you can get your size and iron on stripes. Have fun! Mary |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: SINSULL Date: 27 Jul 01 - 04:37 PM Have to agree on the uniform issue, Brett. Horizontal stripes flatter no one! Now "bell bottoms and bibs"...that would work! |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: RichM Date: 27 Jul 01 - 04:57 PM yum...a chocolate church... I want to convert right now! |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Naemanson Date: 28 Jul 01 - 12:47 AM Yup, at the Chocolate Church we worship the God Iva! At the Chocolate Church it is not a crime to be convicted of Hersey! IanB, the Chocolate Church is an old Episcopalian Church that has been painted a dark chocolate brown. Inside the sanctuary there is now a large stage and auditorium seating. At capacity the place seats almost (over?) 300 people. Next door is the annex with small performance space and beyond that is the art gallery. It is a great place where we hold concerts, present plays, and do all kinds of wonderful things. |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Jul 01 - 01:45 AM Of course, you could always get a plain shirt and some fabric paints..... mask out the areas you don't want and paint the stripes on.... I understand it is easier to get these things in the UK where we don't think of the Tshirt as an item of underwear. And is there any evidence that sailors actually wore striped shirts at all? I know the square collars were to keep the pitch off their jackets from the club ended pigtails they had, but why striped shirts and bellbottoms? Surely the bellbottoms would make climbing the rigging difficult? LTS |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Naemanson Date: 28 Jul 01 - 08:48 AM Liz, unfortunately there is no argument on Earth that will sway these guys from these shirts and the uniforms. It's a good thing I love this crew as I do for otherwise I might mutiny *Grin* (I have considered using fabric paint to make diagonal stripes though.) I know of no tradition of stripes for sailors except, maybe, in the military ships. The regular able bodied sailor just wore whatever rags he could afford. The stripes, I believe, are a fantasy concocted by the writers of plays and novels. Thanks to everyone for these sources. I may not have to wear the same shirt repeatedly at a festival some day. |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Jul 01 - 11:56 AM Brett, if you don't behave we'll give you a checkered shirt with a cat of nine tails, nice overlapping diagonal checks on your back. A wide Crew Neck is preferred. The colors can vary and it can be short sleeved or long. My favorites are the Russian Navy surplus but oddly enough they don't seem to export the larger sizes, only the wimpy sizes for folks like me. There are a many references to checkered shirts as there are to stripped ones in the literature, but we're plunked for stripes. We've never tried spots, but that might be tasteful. What do you think? |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Peter T. Date: 28 Jul 01 - 01:25 PM There is a new book on the history of striped clothing, and it has all kinds of interesting references to how horrified people were by stripes in the Middle Ages (the devil's clothing, etc.). Drifted into prison wear. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Naemanson Date: 28 Jul 01 - 01:36 PM Ooo Peter! I love it! The devil's stripes. It certainly horrifies me. Maybe that would convince them to... No, I know these guys. That would just excite them. I may have to go with my idea for diagonal stripes. |
|
Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: katlaughing Date: 28 Jul 01 - 02:00 PM Liz, tee shirts over here are a common bit of attire, not thought of as just underwear much at all anymore; haven't been for years. Tattooing...sounds good!**BG** kat |

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Naemanson Date: 28 Jul 01 - 02:31 PM Uh, guys, I don't know how else to break it to you so I might as well be blunt. NO TATTOOS! If I wanted to go the tattoo route I could just wear one of the shirts that are too small. I already have to do that. *bg*

Subject: RE: Striped Shirts (Uniforms! Oh God!) From: Hollowfox Date: 30 Jul 01 - 11:41 AM Peter, that book sounds interesting, any chance of a title and/or author? Naemanson, you sure didn't look like a triple x size when we met. I have to learn your dressing secrets. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye out for a shirt or two. Mary |
