This is kind of fun. Meryl Streep, yes, because everytime you see her on screen you say "look how she's acting." But the grand prize goes to pretty boy Tom Cruise who was never in a movie he didn't stink up.

I have to agree with Spaw and Wesley that "Two-Lane Blacktop" is a definite candidate for the title of worst movie of all time, and that the performances of James Taylor and Dennis Wilson are the worst examples of film acting that I have ever seen. I mean, none of the other actors mentioned above were ever anyything like as dire as these two. What must Warren Oates have thought?

The strange thing is that for me, a bad film can be horribly compulsive, and if "TLB" were to air tonight on TV, I would watch it again, all the way through.

Charleton Heston has got to be on this list. I still remember his final scene in "Planet of the Apes" when he drops to his knees on the beach and beats the sand with his fist. "Damn them! Damn them all!" Incredibly bad.

William Shatner, Jerry Lewis, and Ronald Reagan, in that order. Of course, in defense of Shatner, he made a good Star Trek captain. Being a bad actor is a prerequisite for that role, which is why Patrick Stewart made such an awful captain--he's too convincing. Can't wait to see who they dig up for the new Star Trek this fall. And MASH was a really good show!

I am also consumed with regret for never having seen "Dumb and Dumber" or "Invasion Earth".

But that is as nothing compared to the regret I have for having SEEN "Independence Day" and "Armageddon".

Just saw the new "Planet of the Apes" and did not like it much for various reasons...too much action and fighting for my taste. I like movies that require an attention span of more than 5 seconds now and then, but they are becoming fewer and fewer, it seems. Kristofferson got a small part in it...not much to work with, but he sported an impressive amount of hair, anyway. The apes were no doubt quite envious of this, and made sure to kill him in short order.

I actually liked Brad Pitt in "Seven Years in Tibet", and I really liked the subject matter. The general public, however, was not too impressed. Not enough action, I guess. Sigh.

And hey, don't diss Schwarzenneger! He makes Stallone look inarticulate and half-witted. :-) (Like, who doesn't?)

Did someone mention Derek Jacobi -the man's a genius! Trouble with those classicly trained actors is that they don't transfer well to the big screen so lovely Johnny (Gilguid) Ralphy (Richardson) Larry (Olivier) were all completely hammy on screen, but absolutely amazing on stage. The rule is broken by Judi Dench who is mesmeric anywhere. And of course Kenny (Branagh) was excellent except in Frankenstein which was crap. anyway luvvies, enough from moi -(air kisses and leaves stage left pursued by bear)

OMG! How could I forget "Heaven's Gate"?! Thanks, LH. So far that's the only movie I've ever walked out on. I truly didn't care if that community of ..what were they Swedes?...lived or died.
Oh yeah, speaking of not caring if they lived or died, I felt pretty much the same way about the "Lost in Space" movie. I wish they had rammed right into the Sun near the beginning of that film.

Now, help me out here. Mick Jagger was awesomely vomitous in "Performance" ("Memo From Turner", in which he greased his hair back and appeared to inflate his lips even further). BUT (and here I defer to the Catters from Oz) was he as bad as that in "Ned Kelley"?
The problem with these things is that too frequently I find myself shrugging and thinking, well, that actor/actress/song, etc., wasn't THAT bad. There are elements in all these categories , though, that I've taken a completely irrational (and probably unfair) dislike to. Angelina Jolie.The whole Rolling Stones catalogue. Mahler. Derek Jacobi. Drew Barrymore. Sinead O'Connor. It could have gone another way, but it didn't.

I think Meryl is a lovely actress and I know that she comes from kind parents. My daughter use to trick or treat at their house.

Johnny Depp was brill in Benny & Joon; Don Juan DeMarco; What's Eating Gilbert Grape; and, Edward Scissorhands, IMO.

Gosh, Peter, I'm beginning to feel sorry for poor Kevin Costner...although I can see your point.

"Dances With Wolves" remains one of my favourite movies, but it just happened to suit his style, while most of the others he was in did not.

I give "The Postman" a slight, but significant edge in awfullness over "Waterworld".

Kris Kristofferson has also shown a knack for starring in some terrible blockbusters. Remember "Heaven's Gate" and "Amerika"?....so bad you had to see them to believe it. "Amerika" was like the last insane gasp of Reaganite paranoia...a right-winger's political wet dream in 4 interminable parts. At the end they all sing the "Spar-Fwangled Dingle-Dangle". Gimme a break.

Sorry....Dumbass Spaw forgot to closes the Bold after dead. It's the heat and thinking of James Taylor that did it. The only plus to the movie was that the royalties were donated by JT for the recently added wing on the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed. All of us at the Center appreciate the gift that built the James Taylor Rehab Clinic for Catatonic Blandness.

I certainly would have given the worst actress statuette (!) to the woman with the angora sweater in Glen or Glenda (Help me with her name, somebody). And there were any number of contenders for worst actor -- I particularly admired Paul Simon in Annie Hall, James Taylor already mentioned, Roy Orbison, these music guys, eh? -- and it was a terrible struggle between Kevin Costner in The Postman, or Kevin Costner in Waterworld. The winner? Kevin Costner in "For Love of the Game". Unbelievable, incredible tripe, everyone in it is appalling, the script is putrid and you can set your watch by the plot twists. But Kevin is so superlatively bad you cannot take your eyes off him for a moment. Such is star power. It is the perfect game of appalling acting in our time.

Wesley, I am glad you mentioned Dennis Wilson....I forgot and he too deserves the "billing." Two Lane Blacktop is simply just one of the worst movies of all time.......right there with Plan Nine from Outer Space which featured an actor (Bela Lugosi) who was dead when the movie was made! The performances by Taylor and Wilson suggest that they too were perhaps dead when TLB was made. The writing was atrocious and Wilson spends most of the movie saying, "We have to re-jet the carbs." I doubt whether either of them could find the jets in a carburetor on the best day they ever had.

I'd have to put Kevin Costner at the top of my list. He was okay in "Dancing With Wolves" because his monotone voice worked well with the narrative style. Unfortunately he uses that same monotone voice for every role! It took me about three movies (I hate to admit that one of them was the dreaded "Robin Hood") but I finally gave up on him. Cute to look at but sometimes you need more than that to get through a two hour movie!
My husband has an aversion to Sam Neill with his wooden demeanor. When he heard Sam did a miniseries as Merlin he nearly gave himself a hernia laughing over the whole concept.

Kendall, I particularly like your choices. Jerry Lewis was probably the single MOST OBNOXIOUS actor/personality of all time...if not the worst.

I would like to see a movie where a rejuvenated Jerry Lewis (created through digital technology) teams up with Jim Carey in a gross-out type comedy at a college sorority gathering.

Think of the possibilities....

I also agree that Elvis was a really terrible actor. The poor lad got roped into doing all those lousy movies by his insanely greedy manager. To watch 12 or so Elvis movies in a row is sort of like watching anything else really mediocre on the instant replay...only more so.

I saw "Two Lane Blacktop". And it was a tossup { meaning my lunch } over who was the worst actor in that one. Dennis Wilson was pretty awful too.

Also I've never liked Ron Howard as an actor but he's turned into a darn good director. That was a big suprise for me.

I would vote Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt. But the former did a fair job in The Gift, and the latter did well in 12 Monkeys.

No, my nominations are anyone who's appeared in MASH, A-team, Knight Rider, Baywatch, Murder she wrote, Perry Mason, Ironside, Walker Texas Ranger, and any other kiddie or daytime series I may have missed. Anyone appearing more than once is deserving of a special award for naffness.

Oh yes, any American wrestler. And the "presenters" who have to act surprised. What a farce _that_ is...
