My Dad is keen on finding the words to the Glowing Firesides of Ireland - to the tune of Boolavogue.

Me - keen on anything with a connection to the Lurgan area of north Armagh, Ireland

A wee but more info for yis on this one ....

The sonds mentions Tony Darcy and Sean McNealy from Galway and proud Mayo.

My Dad hails from the north Armagh / Lurgan area of Ireland so I am guessing it is a song that has been sung around those parts a few times.

I found a couple of bits that may help.

Tony Darcy of Headford, County Galway and John "Jack" McNeela from Ballacroy, Co Mayo both died on hunger-strike for political status in Mountjoy Gaol on April 16th and April 19th, 1940 respectively.

Tony is buried in the Republican Plot at Donoghpatrick Cemetery, Caherlistrane, where the annual Co Galway Easter Commemoration takes place.

Lemon:

If you type in Lurgan in the Digitrad & Forum search box you'll see a number of threads you might find interesting along with a song called Lurgan Town.

There's also the following song from the Sam Henry book that doesn't seem to be in Digitrad.

Lurgan Stream
Nellie M'Intyre (Mulkeragh South, Limavady); the late Alexander Thompson (Alla, near Park)
[From "Sam Henry's Songs of the People"]

When to this country first I came, my mind from love being free
It was the beauty of that female bright that so enticed me
It was the beauty of that female bright that set my heart aflame
To sing her praise I'll now set forth, she dwells near Lurgan Stream

Her cheeks are like the roses red that's newly blown in June
Her teeth like the polished ivory, and her breath a sweet perfume
Her yellow hair waves in the air, most rare for to be seen
And with a dart she pierced my heart and set it in a flame

It was on a Monday evening, my love I chanced to meet
I took her in my arms and gave her kisses sweet
I asked her if she would marry me, or single would remain
Or if she would cross o'er the seas with me and leave sweet Lurgan Stream

'If I would cross o'er the seas with you, I am sure that would be known
Or if I would cross o'er the seas with you, my friends would me disown
If I would cross the seas with you, I would be much to blame
So here at home I mean to roam and dwell near Lurgan Stream.'

'Oh, that the moon may be withdrawn, no more to rule the night
Or that the sun may be withdrawn, no more to rule daylight
The twinkling stars, they may fall down, no more for to be seen
If ever, love, I prove false to you when far from Lurgan Stream.'

She says, 'Young man, from me withdraw; none of your foolish talk
For it was for recreation's sake that I came here to walk
For Cupid's dart ne'er pierced my heart, not set it in a flame
When I would think on your false love when far from Lurgan Stream.'

My pen is getting feeble now, sure I can add no more
Since she is too young to marry me, I will sail to a foreign shore
I'll bid farewell to my old sweetheart, since her I can't redeem
Likewise to you, old Ireland, when far from Lurgan Stream

Farewell to Letterkenny town, lies near Glen Swilly shore
Where I spent all my youthful days; will I never see you more?
And twice farewell to you, Argyle, where oftimes I have been
Likewise to Kilmacrenan town, lies near sweet Lurgan Stream

Radriano, That Lurgan Stream referred to in the song is in Donegal, the Lurgan Guest Lennon refers to is in Co Armagh, Slan Ard Mhacha.

Fraid I don't have any lyrics at all on this.

The Lurgan Stream song kindly posted does sound like it is from COunty Donegal.

I have seen the Lurgan Town song mentioned and am interested in songs from this area (County Armagh).

Maybe I should set up a seperate thread for this!

Here is that song set out (with an occasional spelling correction).

LURGAN BRAES
The summertime being in its prime
The weather calm and clear
My troubled mind no rest could find
For thinking of my dear
I left that town called Portadown
Unto Woodside I came
Where all alone I made my moan
To Kelvin's purling streams

Stream said I as I passed by
Give ear to what I say
How can you roll without control
To such a foreign key
Your murmurs bewail my bosom sorely
Here stands an apprentice boy
He'll never prove false to the girl he loves
Till Kelvin stream runs dry

There is many a pretty little fish
Swims in yon river clear
There is many a long and weary mile
Between me and my dear
There is many a flower grows in yon bower
But none my fancy please
He sobbed and cried he loved a maid
Lived near to Lurgan Brae

There is a bonnie wee lass
In my own country
Ad her I will go and see
But if she's dead or wed
I'm at my liberty
If ever I chance to go that way
As I suppose I may
I will call and see the lass I loved
Who lived on Lurgan Braes

More songs about Lurgan can be found at Pay The Reckoning's Rants and Raves and a rake of original tunes "in the tradition" which are inspired by Lurgan and its environs may be found at Aidan Crossey's Original Tunes.

If you visit the site, drop an e-mail or sign the guest book.

Tell your da that more stuff is added regularly.
