Subject: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:49 PM Even with the fine story on Adam Taliaferro, Penn State didn'y have it tonight!!! Miami completely routed their asses for 30 minutes and ABC decided to take the national coverage elsewhere at halftime. Sorry Max........

Subject: RE: BS: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: AliUK Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:52 PM Is this about another one of those obscure american sports. I mean why don't they take up hurling? ( tongue firmly in cheek) |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: Mark Cohen Date: 02 Sep 01 - 12:36 AM I didn't see the game, but 'Spaw, I assume you must be talking about Miami of Ohio. Otherwise why would an Ohioan care about a team from the Deep South? Aloha, Mark (Did ABC really do that? That's truly embarrassing...) |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: catspaw49 Date: 02 Sep 01 - 12:30 PM Very cute Doc.... The University of Miami (as opposed to Miami of Ohio) is ranked #2 and Penn State is in a rebuild, but ABC really did a great job at the beginning of the game as Adam Taliaferro led the team out. He's the kid who got the broken neck in the Ohio State game last year and the fact that he is walking and looking very normal is a wonder od medicine and the human will...a great advance in spinal cord injury stuff. It was very emotional and combined with Paterno going for the win that will put him in a tie for the winningest coach of all time made PSU an emotional favorite, even with Bob Griese and the other announcer. Then they had to play the game.............. The first half was a slaughter with Miami running all over Penn State. ABC announced just before the half that except for some Pennsy and Florida viewers, they were taking us to a "more competitive game." It was 30-0 at the half. The game ended up at 33-7, so Penn State had a better second half although I think this was due to the fact that they were allowed to use 22 tanks instead of their players and Miami put in a squad Jewish grandmothers in polyester pantsuits from Ft. Lauderdale. Spaw |

And as I rarely watch network TV it made me wonder if others out there would take it differently too.......Glad to see you confirmed my suspicions........ Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: wysiwyg Date: 02 Sep 01 - 02:36 PM Spaw-- LOL! And I ignored the thread as long as I could, but I finally had to see why you were talking to Max about football and ABC notation. So thinking all this over, I decided to get the hell off the Cat for a couple of hours this afternoon and go for a picnic! ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: Susan from California Date: 03 Sep 01 - 11:59 AM Warning, THREAD DRIFT. When I was in Williamsburg VA I heard that the name Taliaferro was pronounced "Tolliver" in tidewater VA during the 18th century. Booker T. Washington's T. stood for Taliaferro, and he was born in VA, though I don't believe he was born in the tidewater area. DOes anyone happen to know if Booker T. Washington has a connection to the Williamsburg area (other than the fact that he attended The Hampton Institute)? Sorry bout the thread drift, I will just say that I was happy that UCLA was able to overcome a lackluster 1st half, I missed the 2nd half because I was out listening to a local blues band.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorry MAX-PennStateToo Boring For ABC From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Sep 01 - 01:41 PM Talliaferro is still Tolliver in much of England and the south. He was born in Franklin Co. VA (sorry, map not handy) and worked in Malden, WV after The War Between the States. After attending Hampton, he went back to Malden for a while. Doubt that this helps. |
