Subject: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: Jack the Sailor Date: 07 Sep 01 - 02:19 PM I'm presently reading "The Bear and the Dragon" by Mr. Clancy. One of the principle elements of the plot revolves around Dr.'s in the People's Republic of China "aborting" full term babies during birth but just before they take their first breath. A very barbaric practice in my opinion. Mr. Clancy has a reputation for putting amny technical facts in his books. Does anyone have any reason to believe that this one is true? |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: Deckman Date: 07 Sep 01 - 04:30 PM Hi Jack the Sailor ... I'm reading the same book ... even as we speak. I think smacks of blatent racism. IN addition, I ran into the same thing about three weeks ago when a family member in another city e-mailed us some very gtoss photos and text purporting the same kind of crap ... again chinese. I suspect the somewhere, there's a hate mongering group pumping this stuff out on the internet. That's my $.02 worth. CHEERS, Bob |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Sep 01 - 04:34 PM Please check your facts before you presume racism. There were some very tough policies. Please do a search and let us know what facts you find, THEN let's discuss them, please? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Sep 01 - 05:55 PM I don't know what to think. Maybe I wouldn't call it racism, but there's lots of anti-Chinese and anti-Moslem propaganda going around these days. There's so much falsehood and misperception that has the ring of truth, that I wonder if we can believe anything at all. My belief is that people are basically good. When I hear talk of a nation of monsters, my first response is to doubt what was said. Maybe there are a few monsters causing a lot of trouble - but I still believe very firmly in the goodness of the vast majority of Chinese and the vast majority of Moslems and the vast majority of Israelis, and the vast majority of all people. I get very nervous about the broad generalizations people make about various groups. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: Sorcha Date: 07 Sep 01 - 06:23 PM Was this in China, or elsewhere? China has STRICT birth regulations.........don't know if girl babies are still smothered at birth, but they used to be because sons are/were "more valuable" which is barbaric too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: Melani Date: 07 Sep 01 - 10:01 PM My basic feeling is that the Chinese GOVERNMENT is not a very nice group of people. Most of the people I know who have adopted Chinese babies have girls. They are still not valued as much as boys. But that is common throughout the world--just more pronounced in China. |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: katlaughing Date: 08 Sep 01 - 12:47 AM Scrolling down through this paper by the Tibetan Government in exile, is pretty chilling, although it has not been updated since 1996, so one can hope that conditions may have improved. And, just to be "fair" here is the latest Chinese government Reproductive Health Survey results. I have not read any of the articles or results, but I would assume it puts a good "spin" on things. kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: Jack the Sailor Date: 08 Sep 01 - 04:25 PM I hope that my question has not been interpreted as racism. There is very disturbing passage in the book describing a needle of formaldehyde being prepared for injection into an unauthorized infant's head as she crowns. Mr. Clancy's book is, of course fiction. But he does have a fine reputation for doing his homework and putting Facts in his books. I was hoping some of you could help me sort out whether this was fact or fiction. If it is proven to be fact. Then my opinion of the government of China will change for the worse. |

Subject: RE: BS: Tom Clancy & Chinese Babies From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Sep 01 - 04:29 PM OK, to clarify. What I think may be racism in action is the widespread spamming of the factoid of what has actually occurred-- using it as a racist slam, if that is occurring. What ELSE may be racism I just ask people to be careful about saying, and to have some basis for it. Let's look deeper into what HAS happened in China, and let's talk more specifically about who is spreading what, about it, and how. THEN maybe we can know the why. ?? Make sense? ~S~ |
