Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:21 AM I was driving home, along a normally busy road. Every car simply pulled up and stopped. I'm not an emotional man, but I shed a tear - and I won't forget John |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:24 AM Ditto here in Manchester. The road into Old Trafford looked like a car park - even the white van drivers waited patiently. Very emotional time for us all. Peace Dave the Gnome |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST,micca at work Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:25 AM Today at 11 For 150 heartbeats Our multi-ethnic, multi-culture college Stopped.. the silence between the whistle signals eerie as Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jew and pagan. White ,pink and many shades of brown thought about the dead and those still lost. And shared the sense of being all of One. In 150 heartbeats We stood in silence Planes were hijacked 2 buildings fell down thousands died a world ended no one and nothing will ever be the same again. |

Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Airto Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:00 AM I and thousands of my colleagues here in Brussels stood in complete silence on the street with the Belgian Prime Minister and the Commissioners of the EU. No speeches before or after, just three minutes of silence. It couldn't have been more eloquent. |

Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Cappuccino Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:07 AM Apparently this was the first time that so many countries have shared a silence. One of the top men of the European Union said 'in the dark days of Europe, America stood by us, and now we stand by them'. I work from home, so was on my own - but it still felt powerful in this room. - Ian B |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST, Moira Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:10 AM I work in a busy outpatients department in a London Hosptial and everyone who could took part in the 3 minute silence. It was a tearful and moving occasion. My patients tell me even the buses stopped. I am lucky, I have not been directly affected by this terrible event but my heart goes out to those who have and for the future of our world. I'm just so sorry. |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:19 AM I have not read of a single European country that had not lowered the flags, stopped in common silence, changed the usual way of life. You may only see footage about the bigger countries such as the first ever stopping of the Paris underground for a nondomestic reason or the largest gathering in Berlin since the fall of the wall, but be assured that in Helsinki, Budapest, Warsaw, Vaduz, Lissabon, Vienna,....people have also found a way to share your mourning. Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST,Lanfranc at the orifice Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:38 AM The City of London stopped at 11. Many of us here know we will have lost friends, colleagues and acquaintances when the final dreadful list is published. Some we know of already, others we will come to know, but even the strangers are in our thoughts and prayers. The bell of Southwark Cathedral is tolling as I post. If one man's death diminishes me, as Donne wrote, by how much are we all diminished by the WTC carnage? Or could it be that the solidarity of all decent folk in this time of trouble actually produces change for the better? Were that to happen, they might not have died in vain. Micca, thank you for that poem. Alan

Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST,John Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:39 AM The rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner' at Buckingham Palace moved me greatly. I was in the car at the time, listening on the radio, and haven't been home since. If anyone can point me towards a 'RealVideo' or some other video format of it, I'd appreciate it, so that I might sing along for myself. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's how I feel John |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Fibula Mattock Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:13 AM We stopped at 11 here in Bristol. Back home, the Other Half was off work today. Everything shut down in Ireland - heck, even the pubs were closed - because of our strong ties to the US. There isn't a village the length of the country that doesn't have family across the ocean. |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Linda Kelly Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:19 AM The same in every city in the UK, at the railway stations n the hospitals in the shopping centres -a salute to the dead. And in St Paul's, the Queen Prince Philip Prince Charles and the current and past Prime Ministers listened to a memorial service. thousands lined the streets. The Star Spangled Banner was played for the first time ever in this cathedral, which is in the heart of the financial City of London. The Archbishop of Canterbury gave an address which moved me to tears, but told us to remember that other great monument of New York, the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of freedom and hope. A choir of angelic voices rang out to the most beautiful rendition of the Lords Prayer i have ever heard and the hyms,Immortal Invisible God only wise and Mine Eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. You could see Americans in the congregation smile as this hymn rang out. It was solemn but not grave, the voices were uplifting and hopeful -a truly fitting reminder. |

Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST,NSC Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:32 AM Ireland is currently on a National day of mourning. Even the pubs are closed. Here in Nenagh the town stopped moving altogether during the 3 minute silence. Joe Barry played a lament on the pipes immediately afterwards and condolances were passed on behalf of the people of Nenagh to Nuala Gonzales, a native of Manhattan who is waiting for news of friends. She accpeted this gesture eloquently on behalf of Americans and for those who have been bereaved. George Henderson |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:43 AM Hull was silent at 11AM, as far as I know every town and city in the UK was the same.I live on a main road into the city centre, and many cars pulled over and stopped to observe the 3 minute silence. |

Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: InOBU Date: 14 Sep 01 - 10:10 AM How lovely and appropriate to have a moment of quiet. Genie and I - our neighborhood until this morning was a "frozen zone". Here in Downtown New York, no cars, only residents allowed in. We were sitting in front of an Egyption restaurant, friends of ours, having dinner at an out door table on a lovely night, only the constant smell of smoke a reminder that our quiet pleasent evening was a symptom of the terror. But, away from the immidiate sceane, there is a quiet here, a terribly ironic immage of peace. So, let this quiet and peace proceed, though I am afraid it will not. Thanks, and all of you all are in our hearts as well. Larry and Genie |

We are so very connected to this tragedy and my thoughts are with each and every one of you! Let there peace on earth and let it begin with me. Barb |
Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: GUEST,Celtic Soul Date: 14 Sep 01 - 02:55 PM I want to add my own thanks to those already chimed here. It is the strangest feeling to be so utterly sad, and so completely touched and proud all at the same time. This was not something that happened to the US alone. It happened here, but there were people from all over the world in the twin towers, and likely a few at the Pentagon as well. The world grieves the loss, and those of us at ground zero are heartfelt touched by the connection this great tragedy has brought to the peace loving people of the world. From the bottom of my heart, my brothers and sisters, Thank you! |

Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: bassen Date: 14 Sep 01 - 03:15 PM For many Norwegians the US is a second homeland - spiritually or factually: Norway stopped at noon. Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: Eric the Viking Date: 14 Sep 01 - 05:20 PM I explained to my class of 13 yrs old special needs pupils the sadness, I felt, the sorrow the world felt and the tremendous suffering that was being felt. All our school of 140 very noisy special needs children and their staff stopped for three minutes of silence to think, prey (many of them are Moslem) It was a wonderful ,but eirie silence, even the traffic stopped outside. The tragedy touched many of them, even in my school there are children and staff who have friends and relatives in NY. My daughter's school is holding a bring and buy sale to help raise some money for the children of this event. My daughter is giving her best toys to sell, today was her birthday, she's 9. She told us she was happy for it to be her birthday, but she was still sad and it didn't feel right to be so happy ( I felt tears). At ASDA tonight,(supermarket) there is a book of condolence. We signed, and an asian lady behind us wept and told us how sad she felt, as she signed she told us how evil she thought these people were. The world has been touched. |

Aon And more. Voices on a telephone, sig's on a fax, names on an E Mail, codeword on a telex, over the last 30 years. At noon I went to lunch. The sky outside was clear and blue - no vapour trails, no glinting jets. The sky way was clear. (Swansea lies under the main route from London to the US of A) This evening at a political meeting we started with three minutes silence. Let the world mourne and remember. Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: mouldy Date: 15 Sep 01 - 02:24 AM I was "doughing", so I switched my work light off, and sat quiet. It was the first day I had not put on the 24 hour news channels in the morning, and it gave my senses time to really try and come to terms to what they had seen. Last night I attended a service of prayer in Snaith Priory where we lit candles and prayed, and listened to a couple of Bible readings. The first, from Kings, is the text from which the hymn "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" is taken. The second, from Romans 8. My love to you all in America. Subject: RE: 3 minutes From: CET Date: 15 Sep 01 - 07:27 PM In Ottawa, there were 100,000 people gathered on Parliament Hill and jamming the nearby streets. There were US flags everywhere. It was utterly silent - the only time I can recall such silence was at the burial of Canada's unknown soldier last year. I had to be there. I have made a lot of friends in the States, particularly this past year since I joined Mudcat and had the opportunity to sing with people at Portland, Maine, at the home of Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon, and at Old Songs. I also think of the Americans I've met in the course of my military service. I also find myself thinking about places like Little Round Top, Antietam, Marye's Heights, and the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia, all of which have touched me very deeply. Why this comes into my mind right now, I'm not sure. I haven't thought it out. Blessings on you all, particularly in New York and Washington. Edmund |
