It was a tearful and moving occasion. My patients tell me even the buses stopped. I am lucky, I have not been directly affected by this terrible event but my heart goes out to those who have and for the future of our world. I'm just so sorry. |

You may only see footage about the bigger countries such as the first ever stopping of the Paris underground for a nondomestic reason or the largest gathering in Berlin since the fall of the wall, but be assured that in Helsinki, Budapest, Warsaw, Vaduz, Lissabon, Vienna,....people have also found a way to share your mourning. Some we know of already, others we will come to know, but even the strangers are in our thoughts and prayers. The bell of Southwark Cathedral is tolling as I post. If one man's death diminishes me, as Donne wrote, by how much are we all diminished by the WTC carnage? Or could it be that the solidarity of all decent folk in this time of trouble actually produces change for the better? Were that to happen, they might not have died in vain. The Star Spangled Banner was played for the first time ever in this cathedral, which is in the heart of the financial City of London. The Archbishop of Canterbury gave an address which moved me to tears, but told us to remember that other great monument of New York, the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of freedom and hope. A choir of angelic voices rang out to the most beautiful rendition of the Lords Prayer i have ever heard and the hyms,Immortal Invisible God only wise and Mine Eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. You could see Americans in the congregation smile as this hymn rang out. It was solemn but not grave, the voices were uplifting and hopeful -a truly fitting reminder. |

Here in Nenagh the town stopped moving altogether during the 3 minute silence. Joe Barry played a lament on the pipes immediately afterwards and condolances were passed on behalf of the people of Nenagh to Nuala Gonzales, a native of Manhattan who is waiting for news of friends. Here in Downtown New York, no cars, only residents allowed in. We were sitting in front of an Egyption restaurant, friends of ours, having dinner at an out door table on a lovely night, only the constant smell of smoke a reminder that our quiet pleasent evening was a symptom of the terror. But, away from the immidiate sceane, there is a quiet here, a terribly ironic immage of peace. So, let this quiet and peace proceed, though I am afraid it will not. It is the strangest feeling to be so utterly sad, and so completely touched and proud all at the same time. This was not something that happened to the US alone. It happened here, but there were people from all over the world in the twin towers, and likely a few at the Pentagon as well. The world grieves the loss, and those of us at ground zero are heartfelt touched by the connection this great tragedy has brought to the peace loving people of the world. All our school of 140 very noisy special needs children and their staff stopped for three minutes of silence to think, prey (many of them are Moslem) It was a wonderful ,but eirie silence, even the traffic stopped outside. The tragedy touched many of them, even in my school there are children and staff who have friends and relatives in NY. My daughter's school is holding a bring and buy sale to help raise some money for the children of this event. My daughter is giving her best toys to sell, today was her birthday, she's 9. She told us she was happy for it to be her birthday, but she was still sad and it didn't feel right to be so happy ( I felt tears). At ASDA tonight,(supermarket) there is a book of condolence. We signed, and an asian lady behind us wept and told us how sad she felt, as she signed she told us how evil she thought these people were. The world has been touched. |

It was the first day I had not put on the 24 hour news channels in the morning, and it gave my senses time to really try and come to terms to what they had seen. Last night I attended a service of prayer in Snaith Priory where we lit candles and prayed, and listened to a couple of Bible readings. The first, from Kings, is the text from which the hymn "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" is taken. The second, from Romans 8. My love to you all in America. It was utterly silent - the only time I can recall such silence was at the burial of Canada's unknown soldier last year. I had to be there. I have made a lot of friends in the States, particularly this past year since I joined Mudcat and had the opportunity to sing with people at Portland, Maine, at the home of Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon, and at Old Songs. I also think of the Americans I've met in the course of my military service. I also find myself thinking about places like Little Round Top, Antietam, Marye's Heights, and the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia, all of which have touched me very deeply. Why this comes into my mind right now, I'm not sure. I haven't thought it out. Blessings on you all, particularly in New York and Washington. Edmund |
