Wow, I've been looking for the lryics to this song for some time too. I dug the Potatos today which got me thinking of this song cause Dad allways sang the chorus when he used to dig the potatos.

I saw Glenn Yarbrough perform this song and lots of others live in Lafayette, LA concert in 1968 while attending USL there.
Memory says it was in a theater in the Oil Center Plaza in Lafayette.
Great concert!!! This song has always stuck in my head even 40 years later. I did have the album of this too but can't even find one like it now.
I'm sure glad to see the lyrics again.

NO! this has no relations to Marty Robins, or cowboy songs or a dog name blue. ("when the work's all done next fall" is not the same)

If you can find any album of Glenn doing Rod, treat yourself to something wonderful. Put it on - Turn off the lights, pour a strong one if you like, lay back ... let your mind wander and be sure to have Kleenex handy.

Boy, that's an old one. Wriiten by rod mckuen I think. I can remeber a line "when the wind is singing high in the chinaberry tree" but I can't remember any more. I think it was on a glen yarborough album named "glen yarborough sings rod mckuen" from the early 1960's. Good luck

Thanks "simply diann". Great song from a fine writer. Do you have the lyrics to "Rustin' In The Rain"? I believe it is another McKuen song that Yarborough recorded. Also done by John Stewart in the Kingston Trio.

I can't figure out WHY it didn't work, but the title fails to come up in the search box. This works, though. Go up to the top of the page where it says Digitrad Lyrics Search. Type in Charlie died at daybreak, then hit Go, and you'll get the lyrics you asked for.

www.GlennYarbrough.com , does have the song available on Glenn Yarbrough's Live at the Hungry i album. The name of the song is Rose, Me and My Dog (Old Blue) (click for sample).
I'm not enough of a Yarbrough fan to want to buy the album to transcribe it. I think he's a little too pretentious for my tastes, although I guess I like some of his stuff.

Dave has it right, the song I think is titled simply "Rose" and is on either "Baby the Rain Must Fall", "One More Round", or "Honey and Wine" all of which are in boxes under my bed, waiting for me to get my turntable hooked up again.

I remember lots of long, boozy evenings at the GOld Hill in outside of Boulder CO, singing that very song! The Dillards used to visit the Inn in those days; you might look in some of their stuff.

Darn it, Dave, I DO remember that song, but I don't remember even as much as you do. It was one of the really good songs Yarbrough sings - I just wish he'd sing more of the good ones. Even after all these years, his voice is still very good.

"Our only son went off to fight in 1944. A year went by and we got word he wouldn't be coming home anymore.

Maybe this will help someone remember. The song reminds me of my grandparents.

Shanachie/Yazoo has reissued (and expanded) the WHEN I WAS A COWBOY recordings as Yazoo 2022 and 2023. Highly recommended, though I have only volume I, which does not include When The Works All Done This Fall. I am sure that it was on the lp that Chet mentions, which I think was on Shanachie/Morning Star

Doc Watson does this great old ballad a bit differently than MMM and,for my money, much more in character. The CD is titled "Doc Watson On Stage featuring Merle Watson". It is on Vanguard VCD 9/10.

I have an old album on either Rounder or Flying Fish records, I believe, entitled "When I was a Cowboy" which is said to be an album of mostly real cowboys doing real cowboy songs. If you're really interested in the history of cowboy music, it's worth trying to find. It includes "When the Work's all Done this Fall".

The jacket accompanying MM Murphy's album says, "Cowboys showing reverance for their mothers often sang this poignant song about a poor cowboy who was mortally injured in a fall from his horse. In the original 1893 poem "After The Roundup", by Montana cowboy poet D.J. O'Malley, the cowboy's mother apparently preceded him in death, for his last words were "I'll see my mother when work's done this fall."

I thought I posted a note, but it isn't here. Okay, srtart over. Thanks Joe for mentioning the DT version, which is the one I meant but missed on my first seach through DT. Yes, it doesn't look like the one asked for, unless someone 'improved' it. My general feelings about Glen Yarbrough are about the same as Joe's, but I have an early 33 1/3 by him alone with some rare old English songs I've seldom or never heard elsewhere, and that's one I like very much.

This is going to bug me until we find it, although I'm glad people pointed out "When the Work's All Done This Fall." The song Glenn Yarbrough recorded is quite different, as I recall. I don't think I've heard it in 30 years, so the memory of it is kind of vague. Does anybody at least know the name of this song, so we know where to start looking? Any Limeliters fans out there? I have to admit my tolerance for Yarbrough is a bit limited - he did some good stuff at times, but a number of his performances were what I would categorize as "crude" or "sappy." I don't know if I can stand listening to any more Yarbrough in my search for this song. Thanks to Ron, I was inspired to pull out Michael Martin Murphey, and I feel much better. Whew! Thanks, Ron.
