Tonight (September 17) marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Though the name of the holiday means "Head of the Year" and the first month of the year was originally in spring, it's become the tradition to celebrate the beginning of the year at this time. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Ten Days of Awe, culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. For Jews around the world, it is a time of introspection, of acknowledging actions we have taken that have been hurtful and wrong, of asking forgiveness from God and from those we have hurt, and forgiving those who have hurt us, and of renewing our commitment to becoming better people and our dedication to the ideal of Tikkun Olam, helping to heal the world. None of us is perfect, but at this season we strive to come closer to our ideals.

Even in this time of fear and despair for so many, I still hope that this coming year may be one of peace and freedom for all. L'Shanah Tovah Tikateyvu -- May we all be inscribed for a good year.

I went to my local folk club (Herga, in Harrow, London, England) tonight, and found that an anti-war theme developed spontaneously. But for my second song I sang Si Kahn's New Year's Eve song, because I thought "May the New Year bring you freedom peacefully" was apt too.

I have not yet felt able to participate in any of the many religious activities going on around me, but will do so tomorrow. My family has spent more time with our synagogue this week than in the past year. The really hard one will be Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

So Happy New Year to you all, and may we find the strength to forgive our enemies.

September is also the first month of the Orthodox Christian Liturgical Year. Dating from the fourth century and the Emperor Constantine, September was chosen in part because it coresponds to the time when Jews celebrate the New Year.

Liland, How about the labour song, "Alle Brider?" The chorus goes: Un mir zeinen alle brider, Oy, Oy, alle brider Un mir zingen fröliche lieder Oy, oy, oy! But I was taught it as , "... oy, oy, schwester, brider..." instead. If you don't know the rest of the song, perhaps someone will post it.
