The info on it and the blocks, fixes and all are at Symantec/Norton. Just the info....We've had lots of these talks about how to protect yourself to the best you can....Hope everyone was listening. Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: wysiwyg Date: 18 Sep 01 - 05:18 PM Thanks, Spaw, that's good information. I seem to be clean, thank God. Just to reassure the large number of people I mail with, since the SIRCAM scare I've used Hotmail without Outlook Express except for about four messages that were so big they had to go through our home ISP. But in any case, in the body of the message I always give the document name of any files I am sending, and the size they should be as well. If my message quotes the sender's message it should appear as text, not a .eml extension, unless the recipient has chosen a setting that converts them that way. And I am virus-updating and scanning weekly, automatically. But I will be suspending mailing any attachments at all until Norton has the scan and fix for this one, ready to go. And anyone who gets a mail "from" me that does not meet these tests should ask me if I sent it, before opening it. OE had been very useful in synchronizing multiple mail addresses, archiving from all onto the hard drive, and could combine POP and IMAP mails-- Netscape, as far as I can determine, does not. But that does it for OE for me. I think this continued industrial sabotage on MS products sucks, but I can't keep playing this game. Thanks again for letting us all know. BTW, the "I send this to ask your advice" one with a .pif file attached is still floating around as well. Someone "sent" it to me last week, and of course I did not open it and am still scanning all clean, but do be looking out for that one, folks, as well. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: Bill D Date: 18 Sep 01 - 09:32 PM to ALL my friends...there are several great, free ways to do email without using OutlookExpress OR Netscape.. free email software Pegasusmail, listed here, is very good, and there will soon be a new version out, totally re-written and wonderful. and one more good one (I have used this, and it is very nice) I personally use POP3 Scan Mailbox to look at my mail BEFORE it downloads, so I can delete any spam or suspicious messages. This may have saved me from the SIRCAM virus, though I did have Norton running also. I also use Eudora email for most of my regular stuff..(so far...till I see the new Pegasus) Folks...these things work! A non-Micro$oft email program plus a good anti-virus program will do much to ease your mind....here is a free (if you are in the US) anti-virus program. I hope this latest mess hits none of us! |

Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: hesperis Date: 19 Sep 01 - 05:30 PM Pegasus is very good. You can set up different identities, imap or pop, and also filter to different mailbox folders. I have it set to read text-only, which prevents me from getting a lot of the nasty scripts. |

Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: Wesley S Date: 19 Sep 01 - 05:43 PM It hit my wife's company - they've had a devil of a time with it. My e-mail detected a virus attached to "Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs - the real story" and it came from "HaHaHa". |

Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: Bill D Date: 19 Sep 01 - 09:07 PM here...un-messed..is the mail reading program I use that allows me to view my mail before downloading it and to delete *from the server* anything which seems suspicious. |

Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: katlaughing Date: 19 Sep 01 - 09:29 PM I switched to Eudora and I am one happy camper, let me tell ya! Easy to use, elegant, and it's got this nifty little yin/yang symbol which spins round when it checks for mail. Plus, it's named after a woman, Eudora Welty! Thanks to Bill and Justa Picker! |

Subject: RE: NIMDA Worm/Virus--Please Read From: Bill D Date: 19 Sep 01 - 09:53 PM *grin*..I 'think' I keep using it because Eudora was my mother's name!...but it IS a fine program. |
