In a very flowing and comprehensible fashion ,far superior to Bush ramblings, Ali spoke out today. His message can be brought to heart by all.

I liked the water/spiritual beliefs analogy.

Hmph. Obviously, it's allegorical. Refers to any manufacturer of dairy products.

It's nice to know Ali is thinking of the farm sector.

I can't remember the specific words of the water/spiritual beliefs analogy, but it was something about how different kinds of bodies of water have different names, but they all contain water. And different forms of spiritual beliefs have different names but they all contain some truth.

I hope that Ali's comments were a lot more moderate than those made by another convert, Cat Stevens, during the Gulf War.

So, you are saying that Ali didn't lament the forthcoming dissolution of all our freedoms? Maybe he and Cat could Duke it out on pay-per-view.

"The pond , the stream, the lake and the ocean all have different depths and current but they like all of us are made of water. "

This was part of his message of common sense to prevail on all sides. If I were to continue to quote him I would merely exceed the bounds of paraphrasing.

Unfortunately, some "water" decided to crash planes into a few American buildings and kill 5,000 people. Sadly, there wasn't enough "water" to put out the fires once they started...The peace and love stuff is great for the 99.9% of the world's religions that play by some sort of rulebook, but doesn't work on the terrorists. That's why they're called that. Yet I've heard some Americans actually say that "that's just their culture, what do we expect from them after we've been so mean to the world?" I hope that those select few will drop their feel-good moral relativism blankets and come back to Planet Reality before the next terrorist decides to open up a six pack of Anthrax at the Super Bowl...

Not that I'm saying that rant applies to anyone in here; I just had to get it off my chest.

Well that's the conundrum, isn't it? Terrorism can't be allowed to run rampant, but how can you stop it without somebody getting hurt? I don't think there's a way. If it's true that the universe seeks to balance itself, then there cannot be peace without war, because one balances the other; likewise there cannot be good without evil, nor can there be life without death.

We're not going to be able to combat terrorism by having the Welcome Wagon bring these guys a fruit basket. Unless it contains an exploding banana.

Yes, we are all people. We are alike more than we are different, I believe, and I think most of us want to take care of each other and help our fellow man.

I just don't know how we're going to do it this time.

Mohammad was an orphan. It is Islamic law to take in orphans. The WTC attack has created many thaousands of orphans. Osama has committed a very real and primal sin even for a fundamentalists in this regard.

Ali said he supports whatever decision US leaders make in bringing the terrorists to justice.

Well then, perhaps Osama with his millions should make it his mission to provide for these orphans he may have created.

Hi Loopy... after Puerto Rican nationalists fired on Congress, or Hector Moralas (excuse my poor spelling on his name... ) blew up bombs in New York, should we have declared war on Puerto Rico? I for one, would not think that was a good idea! But, what do you think? Cheers, Larry

Muhammad Ali did not at any time defend terrorists. He was talking about different religions/spritual beliefs. He was speaking as a Muslim. I don't think anyone who watched him speak could interpret his words as anything other than consistant with what the government of the US is saying.

He had spent the day talking to firefighters, rescue workers and other helpers in NYC. After his talk, he was going to visit the site of the attack.

All you people who consider yourself patriots... your president has asked you to make a destinction between Muslims and terrorists. He knows that we need the help of the Muslim nations. Are you going to take his word for it and do as he asks or not?

I didn't mean for my post yesterday to sound like an attack on Muhammad Ali. Everything he said, from what I heard, was on the mark. He seems to support the U.S. 100% in their efforts, and I think he even said he's fight for us if he could. I think Bush was on the mark last night when he said the terrorists are hijacking Islam, too.

My post would have better been used to start my own thread to discuss the small percentage of Americans who just can't wait for the next war to come along, so they can protest it and give meaning to their life. And while protesting the war, as a bonus they get to complain about all other elements of American society that don't meet with their utopian ideals, ideals that never work outside the walls of academia or more than two blocks either side of Haight and Ashbury...

So when is someone going to put in what Ali said, or a link to what he said? (Or did I miss it somehow in looking through this thread?)

Cat Stevens also spoke out today. He seems in support of dealing with these extremists harshly and denounced radicals.

For what it's worth, he also claims to have been misquoted about the Salman Rushdie thing.

Muhammed Ali also was roundly cheered by the site workers and very warmly received. One of the fireman said he was more excited to meet Ali than the President. The guy still "has it." I was glad to see him there.

Here's part of it...

Muhammad Ali

(WINS) September 20, 2001 5:12 pm NEW YORK (AP) -- Three-time heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali made a morale-boosting visit to rescue workers in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

"We appreciate his coming," said Richard Sheirer, director of the city Office of Emergency Management. "I can't tell you how much we appreciate his coming."

Ali, wearing a blue Fire Department baseball cap, was presented with a special credential by Sheirer before heading to the site in lower Manhattan. He told reporters that he was stunned when word of the Sept. 11 attack reached his Michigan home.

"It felt like a dream, like a movie," Ali said. "I didn't think it was something that was happening in real life."

Ali and his wife, Lonnie, said they were saddened that some had blamed the religion of Islam for the terrorist attacks at the Trade Center and the Pentagon.

"Islam is not a religion of hate," said Lonnie Ali. "It's a religion of love."

Ali then offered his message to people of all religious backgrounds: "Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams -- they all have different names, but they all contain water. Just as religions do -- they all contain truths."

Thanks CarolC,

I've always admired Ali and one of my most memorable experiences was seeing him in a Newcastle shopping centre a good few years ago, he was doing a 'talk-in' at the time, I think he was having his marriage blessed at South Shields. The man has the ability to make the hairs on the back of your head stand up truly one of the 'Greats' of my lifetime and I hope his words were of some comfort to all.

Even so, "what have the Romans ever done for us ?" Apart from Hadrians Wall, that is ?

regardez vous Ritchie.

No problem, Ritchie.

I'm afraid this line of yours went right over my head (not an uncommon phenomenon, I'm afraid)...

Even so, "what have the Romans ever done for us ?" Apart from Hadrians Wall, that is ?

Could you help me understand what you mean by that in this context?
