A friend came back from Ireland saying he'd heard about a great song called the Ballad of Biddy Early. I have found links to a poem and several books, but no music. I'm thinking my friend may have misheard or been misinformed, and that this is not a song but just a poem. Anyone know for sure?

See The Ballad of Biddy Early, (Knopf 0-394-88414-0, Sep '89, $13.95, unpaginated, hc) Children's collection of poetry telling the Irish story of the Wise Woman of Clare, illustrated with watercolors by Barry Moser.

The ballad itself is here:

It's 13 pages long-- YOU post it, someone can add the line breaks for you, OK?

I also found numerous mentions of a Black-eyed Biddy, and here is one: CLICK.

Eddie Lenihan is a great storyteller. Hee's a link to anither colection, which includes a picture of him.

If you ever get a chance to hear him, don't miss it. Biddy Early was a real person.

Thanks everyone. Looks like it is meant to be recited, not sung. thanks for confirming that.

It may very well be that someone has done up a tune for it, but that it has not been recorded yet and so would not show up in a web search. Or it may be an old ballad with tune that has simply not been entered into Mudcat, and that no one who knows it, here, has seen the thread yet.

And there's no reason why a tune could not be created, eh?
