Subject: Snail Mail Virus From: kendall Date: 29 Sep 01 - 09:22 PM I just got a warning from a friend about a virus being sent to random addresses that contains virus. It is similar to dysentery, and has killed some people. It is from a "Klingerman Foundation" in a large blue envelope. She says, put it into a plastic bag and call the police. Anyone heard if this is another hoax? It's new to me. |

Subject: RE: Snail Mail Virus From: kendall Date: 29 Sep 01 - 09:38 PM suspicions confirmed. It sounded pretty implausable to me, if for no other reason but the cost of postage these days. I thought the web site you gave only dealt with computer virus' I'll let her know. Thanks |
Subject: RE: Snail Mail Virus From: Amos Date: 29 Sep 01 - 09:44 PM Ya gotta wonder about the mindset of someone who would start or perpetrate something like that. It's similar to someone who would drive an airplane into a building -- no one out there is real. A cartoon mind in a cartoon graveyard. A |
Subject: RE: Snail Mail Virus From: SeanM Date: 29 Sep 01 - 10:34 PM Snopes.com is a wonderful site - it tries to cover a large swath of anything 'urban legend'-ish, from computer viruses, regular silly urban legends ("and when they got home, they found, hanging from the bumper, a bloody hook"), various rumours both true and false, and much more. I highly recommend it. M |

Subject: RE: Snail Mail Virus From: kimmers Date: 30 Sep 01 - 10:44 PM I LOVE SNOPES!! just reading through their archives is good for hours of entertainment. You can sign up to be on their mailing list and get timely updates of what myth is currently causing paranoia amongst your friends and coworkers (and feel really smug when you point our their gullibility in being taking in by such a stupid story). BTW, these days it seems that SNOPES is being run by one overworked and faithful individual, Barbara Mikkelson, who researches and writes all of the articles. Perhaps the 'Cat could serve as a resource for questions involving music? |
Subject: RE: Snail Mail Virus From: Sourdough Date: 01 Oct 01 - 04:11 AM I wrote Snopes a fan letter and was stunned to get a thoughtful reply from Barbara Mikkelson herself. There's a real person there and she is performing a terrific service because she not only investigates and writes up her findings well, she lists her sources. If you are ever asked to vote for a website, Remember Snopes. Sourdough |
