Hi. I just found this site, and it looks great! Now maybe I can find the lyrics to a song I knew as a child. This would have been around 1960, and it was on a 45 record, I believe the title was Pussycat. It's about a boy who falls in love with the neighbor's daughter, who happens to be a cat (at least that's the way I interpreted it as a child). The only lyrics I can remember are

"They called her Pussycat, Puss Puss Pussycat, for her hair was silky fine
Pussycat, Puss Puss Pussycat, how her two big eyes did shine.
She had a smile so sweet, and a great deal more than that,
And she grew and she grew and I smiled at her,
her milky skin like silky fur,
my Puss Puss Puss Puss Pussycat."

I think he grows up and marries the cat, or girl, or whatever she is. I have hunted for that record for years. I would be thrilled if someone knows this one! Thanks! And I'm sorry if I'm not posting this correctly...It's my first time.

I'm sure this isn't quite it, but it's the closest I've found so far.

Amos, Murray, and Sinsull, Thanks for trying. Sinsull, you are the first person I've found that actually remembers this song, so I am heartened. I've thought of some of the words to the first verse, if it rings any bells: Oh I was born in a little old house in a town called (Ioway?), I was eight years old and I fell in love, it seems like yesterday. Down an old (mill road?) in a (pretty little house?) lived some folks not far from me, And they had a child only one year old, a lovely babe to see. They called her Pussycat...

Again, thanks for your help!

I remember it slightly differently:

"Pussycat, Puss Puss Pussycat
For her hair was dark and fine
Pussycat, Puss Puss Pussycat
For her two big eyes did shine
She had a smile so sweet
And a great deal more than that
And she cooed and she purred
When I smiled at her
With her (monkey?)milky skin of silky fur
My Pussycat, Puss Puss Pussycat"

Someone has to know this one.

Sinsull, I'm sure you are right about the "cooed and purred". The last time I heard this song I was 5 or 6 years old, so the lyrics are pretty vague in my memory.

A year and a half later, and I'm still trying to find this song. Does anyone remember who sang it? Thanks.

surely this must be the longest running thread.
Best of luck but try a new title with "lyric required" rather than just pussycat. Lots of mudcatters like to show they know every song and others are just plain helpful.

The site that Amos linked to above is quite an amusing one, although the song found there is not the one Adrienne was looking for. That site belongs to a guy who composes music for kids' pantomimes, and the song in question was created for "Dick Whittington," hence the cat theme. What would you call the style? Techno DJ rap for kids? Anyway, it's clever and fun. Check it out.

I failed to find what Adrienne wanted, but at least this message will refresh the thread.

From: Jim Dixon

PUSSY CAT
Tom Glazer, Sunny Skylar
As sung by the Ames Brothers

Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat.

Well, I was born in a little old house in a town called Barrel Bay.
I was eight years old when I fell in love and it seems like yesterday.
Down the old mill road in a pretty house lived some folks not far from me,
And they had a child only one year old and a lovely babe to see.

CHORUS: They called her Pussy Cat, Puss, Puss, Pussy Cat, for her hair was soft and fine;
Pussycat, Puss, Puss, Pussy Cat, for her two big eyes would shine.
She had a smile so sweet and a great deal more than that,
And she'd coo and purr when I smiled at her
With a milky skin like silky fur,
My Puss, Puss, Puss, Puss, Pussy Cat.

Now, years went by and I grew quite tall for I shot up like a vine,
And I used to watch over Pussy Cat till she reached the age of nine.
Then I said goodbye for I left one morn, for a town in Ioway,
And I didn't see anyone I knew till I came back one fine day. CHORUS

Well, there she was like a pretty rose, and my goodness, how she'd grown.
But the sparkling eyes and the turned-up nose looked the same though years had flown.
Then I knew at once she belonged to me and I knew she felt the same,
So our lives were joined and our first new-born was a girl who bore her name. CHORUS

Puss, Puss, Puss, Puss, Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat.

[Sung by The Ames Brothers on "The Very Best of the Ames Brothers," 1998.]

I too fondly remember and love this song from my youth, and it took me a long time to finally track it down as I didn't know who the singers were. While the lyrics posted above are the same as I've found elswhere, the actual singing of it by the Ames Bros was slightly different.

I swear still that in the second stanza where the posted lyrics say:
"Well, the years went by.." was really
"Now years went by...

"... I left one year, for a town in Iowa" was actually sung as:
"... I left one morn, for a town in Iowa"

Third stanza difference:
"Well, there she stood like a pretty rose..." was really
"Well, there she was like a pretty rose..."

Listen for yourself at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dxiMF9-I-A

This of course doesn't dampen its appeal, just wish the published words matched the performance.

After nine years, I doubt if you are still looking for this elusive "moggy" Adrienne , but I have finally cornered her here on YouTube.   I also loved this song when I was young at home listening to the radio with my Mum. A lovely memory!
