Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 07 Oct 01 - 07:39 PM No, not at all; just that when somebody asks about a song beginning on a midsummer morning, it is probably pointless to direct them to songs beginning on a morning in May! If it comes to it, I should think that your estimate of the number of songs beginning with similar phrases is quite conservative... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Noreen Date: 07 Oct 01 - 01:05 PM Sorry, Malcolm! - my attempt at humour... Are you saying that there is a symbolically significant difference between the two ways of beginning a song? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 07 Oct 01 - 12:18 PM There is quite a difference between roving out one Midsummer's morning and on a bright May morning; let's not confuse the issue unduly! Probably the best-known possibility is Banks of the Sweet Primroses, though the narrator generally walks rather than roves. As Noreen says, we really could do with a little more to go on. A standard ploy of folksong collectors, when a singer couldn't remember any more songs, was to say "Do you know that one that starts As I walked out..." By all accounts, this would almost always result in further songs. Roved worked just as well. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Noreen Date: 07 Oct 01 - 11:47 AM There are 537 songs in the English language (at the last count) which begin with this phrase and 292 more where the singer roves out on a fine May morning :0) Alyska, can you give us a bit more information about the song you are looking for, please? Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Jeri Date: 07 Oct 01 - 11:40 AM OK, I was making clickies while Amos was sending his message. He got the right line with his "another lyric" link, to the song "As I Roved Out." |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Jeri Date: 07 Oct 01 - 11:35 AM The John Reilly in the DT doesn't have that "As I roved out" line in it. Try Factory Girl or Tarry Trousers. Both songs have "Click to play" at the bottom. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Amos Date: 07 Oct 01 - 11:30 AM Sorry -- I mean this version, here. However the line is a little different. Here's another lyric with the same line, but no tune to it., but it was recorded by Planxty on "The Well Below The Valley" (1973). A

Subject: RE: Tune Req: As I roved out one midsummer mornin From: Amos Date: 07 Oct 01 - 11:22 AM This sounds like the opening lines to one version of John Reilly. If you look in the DT database here you'll find a link to a MIDI file at the bottom of the lyrics. |
