Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: DON'T YOU MARRY THE MORMON BOYS
From: Jon W.

The "Don't get married girl" song reminded me of this old Mormon folksong. It is one my wife likes a lot.

W: Come girls come, and listen to my noise.
W: Don't you marry the Mormon boys,
W: For if you do your fortune it will be
W: Johnny cake 'n' babies is all you'll see.

W: Build a little house and put it on a hill,
W: Make you work against your will,
W: Buy a little cow and milk it in a gourd,
W: Put it in a corner and cover it with a board.

W: When they go a-preachin' let me tell you what they wear--
W: Old leather coat all picked and bare,
W: Old straw hat more brim than crown,
W: A pair of dirty socks they've worn the winter 'round.

W: When he comes in the first thing you hear,
W: "Madam, your Daddy has killed you a deer,"
W: Next thing you hear when he sits down,
W: "Madam, this johnnycake's too damn brown."

N: One of the characteristics of Mormon people is the ability to have a good laugh over any-
N: thing. A significant part of the Mormon heritage is the acceptance by Mormon women of
N: the fact that marriage to a good Latter-day Saint man will mean he will be busy at work
N: or in the Church much of his time while they stay home and raise their families.
N: Though no goal is more important to Mormon girls, still this song takes a friendly poke at
N: the pioneer application of this philosophy.
N: "Music of the Mormons", p. 26
