Subject: Any young musicians out there? From: GUEST,Emily Date: 18 Oct 01 - 08:50 AM Hi, I'm 18, a young songwriter and guitarist. I'm just wondering how many other young musicians there are out there...? It's near impossible to meet other young songwriters, so if you're out there make some contact:-) I live in the north west of the UK, but I'd be happy to speak to people from anywhere. Hope to hear from you soon! Emily (Folkygirl@aol.com) |
Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: MMario Date: 18 Oct 01 - 08:53 AM ageist! ;) seriously - sooner or later some of the younger mudcats should be responding to you - we seem to have more active youngsters from the UK then from the US or elsewhere

Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 18 Oct 01 - 10:05 AM Welcome, Emily, I've emailed the addy you supplied with a link to the 'Young musicians in the UK' thread. Sadly, at 33, I must face the situation with dignity and accept the fact that I must now grow a spectular set of facial hair. |
Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: Steve Parkes Date: 18 Oct 01 - 10:26 AM Emily, at Dai's age you tend to look on young musisicans a little differently. At my age, it's not a good idea to look at 'em at all, unless you want to get locked up! Steve P.S. My son and my daughter's chap are both guitarists, but not folkies. I don't know if either of them really write stuff though. |
Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: Benjamin Date: 18 Oct 01 - 10:31 AM I'm 21. Does that count as young? I play guitar (mostly classical) with the mandolin as my second insturment. I've have attempted to write songs and have pulled it off a couple times. I also have a good albums worth of ideas on paper that I can't seem to complete. I'm curently starting to work on an arrangment a song from Fugi for classical guitar and violin/mandolin. I thought you might find that interesting. As what MMario said, all the young ones (except me) seem to be in the UK now. I'm not sure what happened to all the American you people. If you guys are still around, please check in! |

Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: GUEST,Steven G. Date: 18 Oct 01 - 06:27 PM Emily, I guess 25 is a little bit old in a way, or young to some. I am from Canada. I have been playing guitar for about 18 years now. For all those years of playing never wrote a song. Just enjoy playing other people's music I guess. But it is great to hear you are into the songwriting bit. Keep it up. You came to the right place, you are going to get alot of tips here on Mudcat. It is great to get advice. Steven G.

I've written some stuff and you can hear some of my songs (As well as some written by my friend Rocky) at our website. Good to know I'm not the only 18 year old on earth that loves folk music. |

Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: Folkygirl Date: 19 Oct 01 - 02:21 PM Thanks for all the responses (I've gotten myself all signed up!), nice to see there are other young musicians out there! How do you all get yourself heard? I tend to play at my local folk club, and I played a the Fylde Folk Festival this year. I'm hoping to spend some time in the US next year, where I'll hit a few of the festivals and the open mics. Any advice for music places to visit in the US? Emily |
Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: Willa Date: 19 Oct 01 - 02:40 PM You should take a look at a thread named 'To the young UK members'; you'll find plenty of contacts there. |
Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: Benjamin Date: 19 Oct 01 - 07:31 PM Firecat, does anything special happen in England when you turn 18. I remember the big deal everybody made about it as I was turning 18. As it turned out, being 18 wasn't a whole lot different. I did like it better than 17 though if that means anything. As for places in the US, I imagine I could try finding open mic's in Seattle here if you were going to come this way. Other than that, there really isn't much I know of or could help you with. The best places to hear music are almost all 21 and over. But I'm sure there's something that can be done! |
Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: 53 Date: 19 Oct 01 - 07:34 PM folk clubs down south are few and far between, goood luck when you come to the states, just keep your chin up and your guitar hot. bob. |

Subject: RE: Any young musicians out there? From: Folkygirl Date: 20 Oct 01 - 06:04 AM Hi, Thanks for all your responses. As for where I'm going to go, well I don't know - I'm open to all suggestions. My only firm plan is my starting point - I was to start with the Kerrville Folk Festival - are you anywhere near there Ely? Emily |
