I am looking for information about a song that showed up in a family obituary. Aparently two songs were sung at my GG-Grandfather's funerial in 1939. One was 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere' and the other was 'The Homeland'. I know he was Irish and involved in the Methodist Church. All hints (tune or lyrics) welcome.

I found this which seems it MIGHT be it...no date. Found several others with 1990's copyrights......

Homeland

I see the touch of sadness in your eyes
But no more tears, we've had enough goodbyes
I know your heart like mine is far away
Walking through the lanes of younger days
I'd love to steal away with you tonight
And dance 'round the old halls by candlelight
Then through our town we'd fondly reminisce
I'll take you all the place that we miss
I would love to take you by the hand
And roam the country roads of our homeland

Just you and I alone in fairer weather
Until that day, in dreams we'll go together
We'll talk of plans we've had, there's been a few
And dream of things we'll probably never do
But we'll never mention one regret
'Cause all our dreams came true the day we met
I would love to take you by the hand...

It's hard to be sure with nothing but a title. I'll go look at Levy and see if there is any thing there.

Levy was no help. Homeland at Levy is a caricature song for the Ziegfield Follies.....no sheet music, either.

I'll bet it is, nutty. Good job! The date would be consistent. It would have been known in '39 at least. I think the one I posted above is also a "new wrote" song, but it would make a nice funeral song.

A further dig around in Google brought this information to light which just about confirms that this is the right song....

Thank you both for your assistance. I am glad my wonderings brought me to your site. I think as well that Hymn of the Homeland is a good fit and I will include it in my family history as a 'more than likely'. Thank you for the documentation as well. I like to cite all material - do things properly you know. I will be sure to cite this site and your assistance.

Thanks once again for your quick and apt reply.

Copied from Holly and Ivy by Sarah Davies, 1871.

THE HOMELAND.

The Homeland! The Homeland!
The land of the free-born—
There's no night in the Homeland,
But aye the fadeless mom.
I'm sighing for the Homeland,—
My heart is aching here;
There's no night in the Homeland
To which I'm drawing near.

My Lord is in the Homeland,
With angels bright and fair;
There's no sin in the Homeland,
And no temptation there.
The music of the Homeland
Is ringing in my ears;
And when I think of the Homeland,
My eyes gush out with tears.

For those I love in the Homeland
Are calling me away,
To the rest and peace of the Homeland,
And the life beyond decay.
There's no death in the Homeland—
There's no sorrow above!
Christ bring us all to the Homeland
Of His eternal love!
