Subject: Singing at Buntingford? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Nov 01 - 09:10 PM Next weekend - that's 16th to 18th November - is the annual sing-in at The Crown, Buntingford, in Hertfordshire (England). Indoor camping at the Scout Hut, good beer and good breakfasts in the pub, and singarounds all weekend in the room at the back. (With a few tune sessions in the bar probably as well. Unlike some places nobody brings up the vexed issue of Public Entertainment Licences round Buntingford. Touch wood.) At least one other Mudcatter has said he is going to be there, and probably a few more. So if you are going to be there, own up here. And if you think you'd like to and would like to know more, ask away.
Here is a picture of The Crown And here is a map of fabled Buntingford.

Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Nov 01 - 04:34 PM It's starting to look like a Mudcat quorum. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Lanfranc Date: 11 Nov 01 - 02:07 PM Might even make it a quinqum! Alan |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: JudeL Date: 12 Nov 01 - 03:22 AM Damn! .... it clashes with Miskin's winter warmer. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 12 Nov 01 - 05:43 AM I notice the Crown is a PUBLIC HOSUE just exactly what is a HOSUE ? You bleeding southerers dan't know how to talk proper !! |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Gervase Date: 12 Nov 01 - 06:11 AM Yup, I'll be there in the public hosue! From what I've heard, the fame of the event is spreading, and at least one group is planning to come down from Yorkshire ( bleedin' northerers!) for a session of Sheffield carols. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Guessed Date: 12 Nov 01 - 06:38 AM Yup a Miskin clash **tosses a coin** - ooh look it's heads. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Nov 01 - 05:26 PM Yo, G-man, can I blag a lift or something please? Are you staying over and is there space for a little one (not my little one, me!)? Ring me in the week. Ta. XX LTS |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: GUEST,McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Nov 01 - 05:29 PM See you tomorrow. Wrap up warm if you are indoor camping. It's cold in the Scout Hut. And it's cold in Buntingford too, on the walk to and from it. But it's cosy enough in The Crown.
Sheffield Carols - now that's brilliant. I'll never forget Christmas in August in the Balfour at Sidmouth with Ian Russell and cronies. Maybe we can ignite a new tradition in Buntingford. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 16 Nov 01 - 04:48 AM Christmas in August during Whitby Folk Week last year was pretty fab too. There are even some photos of it on Mudcat. Will be doing the real carols on Sunday and I can't wait. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Nov 01 - 04:32 PM Not bad was it those who made it? And hard luck to those who didn't, because you missed something.
Well in my case I'd have missed having my car vandalised by local yobboes when I foolishly parked it in the scout hut car park. But the singing was great anyway. And the beer. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Gervase Date: 19 Nov 01 - 12:46 PM Excellent do - I just wish I could have strayed longer and seen more, other than two flying visits. 'Catters Keith of Hertford and McGrath of Harlow both on fine form with good songs in good voice. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Nov 01 - 06:23 PM Didn't ring me, did you Gervase..... rotten sod. Ah well, I got a better offer on Sunday anyway... sniff, sniff. LTS |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Lanfranc Date: 20 Nov 01 - 06:21 PM I was there, too, albeit invisibly, according to Gervase! Maybe if Kevin posts his pictures, I'll find out if I dreamed it. Missed you, LtS, glad about the better offer. Alan

Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Gervase Date: 21 Nov 01 - 05:17 AM Gulp! Sorry Llanfranc - I didn't realise you were there! I always assumed that with a Mudcat name like Llanfranc you'd be halfway up a mountain on the other side of Offa's dyke (ouch - left myself open to a dose of double entendre there!) Put me out of my misery please; who are you in the real world - and if you are one of the duet, wow, what wonderful stuff!! |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Lanfranc Date: 21 Nov 01 - 06:54 AM Oh, Gervase, I forgive you! I was the one-piece duo with a beard and a guitar sitting in the smokers' corner on your left. We met before, when Susan and Dick of the DT were over. I must be eminently forgettable. I wonder if I should change my handle, it is a bit of a conceit. My given name is Alan Francis, take off the A and the cis, and you have the name of a mediaeval Archbishop of Canterbury, Lanfranc (one L, not Ll as in Llanfair, who's a lady, which I'm not!) I avoid mountains, and never fancied Offa's dyke, or anyone else's for that matter. I used my own name when I joined Mudcat originally, but everyone else seemed to have a pseudonym, so I changed. I agree about the two-piece duo ladies, though, they were something else. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Nov 01 - 07:12 AM I'm very relieved to hear you're not a lady, Alan. But I hadn't realised you were Lanfranc. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 21 Nov 01 - 03:05 PM It was a privilage to meet you Lanfranc, and moreso to hear you perform. Brilliant. Likewise, Mr.McGrath and Gervase. Till next time, Keith. |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Nov 01 - 04:23 PM You were pretty good Keith. And there were others there too who lurk around the Mudcat too.
Semper Floreat Mudcattus |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: Bugsy Date: 21 Nov 01 - 07:59 PM I wish I could have been there too. But it's a long way from Western Australia. I used to cycle to Buntingford through the lanes frome Stevenage when I lived there as a little lad (late 50's - early 60's). It was a beautiful little village back then (as they all were in that neck of the woods). Ah! the nostalgia of it all! CHeers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Singing at Buntingford? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Nov 01 - 09:27 PM I don't think it's changed too much since then. Except they closed the railway, and the road through it is pedestrianised. |
