I've been listening to "Tom of Bedlam" ("Bedlam Boys" in the database) and would like some more information. I know Bedlam was an insane asylum. Can someone tell me when the song written and whether there is a story behind it?

There are about 3 of the 17the century. See C. M. Simpson's 'The British Broadside Ballad and Its Music', #467, 1966.

Isn't the tune of the song, as done by Steeleye Span, of modern origin?
