The Sunday Times reports today: "After years of indecision the Government has finally resolved to build a tunnel to bury the traffic that roars along the A303 past the monument on Salisbury Plain on one of the busiest routes between the Southeast and the West of England. The £155 million scheme will also cover the cost of a full size replica Stonehenge, which it is hoped will protect the original from the damage caused by almost 1M visitors a year" (Has anyone seen Spinal Tap?)This seems to me to be an absolute load of bollocks and a wicked waste of money. I for one enjoyed the view of Stonehenge whilst driving past and I don't look forward to the years of disruption that this will bring. Any thoughts?

Why don't they build a new stonehenge? The old one is falling down.

Yet another waste of money that could be used to build bypasses around the villages that the 303 goes through at the moment.

Would it not be less expensive to build a bridge OVER Stonhenge!? Some of the supports for an elevated roadway are already in place. Motorist Nick.

I know, let's build an enourmous e.m.pulse generator in the underground car park. That way there won't be any point in any one driving to Stonehenge and any one that really wants to see it will have to approach via other means. Sorted.

Hmmm, they HAD a nice bypass route all planned out a few years ago. It would've been great, but unfortunately it would have gone right past Sting's house. Y'know, that nice man Sting who campaigns for eco-issues and wants to save the environment and make the world a more pleasant place? Well he didn't want a bypass in his backyard. Or in sight of his lovely mansion. Result? Development blocked. Hmmm, that'd be the same Sting that advertises ludicrously expensive cars, wouldn't it? How quickly they forget!

So some people really do believe the stuff that appears in The Sunday Times, which should really be called the Sunday Speculation. This story is rubbish, like most of what it printed about Bin Liner and Afganistan

Yeah, the tunnel idea was proposed ages ago. I haven't heard the outcome of it all though. I was at a talk about all of this last year and the guy from English Heritage was basically throwing up his hands and saying "heck they change their mind every five minutes, who knows what the hell will happen".

Anyone want a very realistic virtual Stonehenge? That'd keep me in work for a while.

At least it would provide us with a big hole to bury English Heritage in, in a crouching position.....

This is the same English Heritage who dug up 'Seahenge' from a beach in Norfolk to prevent it being destroyed by the sea, enraging a whole heap of locals and others, then put it into a building to preserve it for all time, and when the building burnt down destroying it, didn't tell anyone......

The same English Heritage who dug up bits of my previous home town, destroyed the rarer mediaeval remains of the market town (and fucked up a perfectly good carpark in the meantime...), to try to get to the alleged Roman remains, failed to find any where they were looking.... so made up some strange excuse for it...

The same English Heritage who insist that a building has to be renovated in exactly the same way as it was built, regardless of age, and then refuses to stump up any funding for it, despite the penury of the owners..... unless that owner is a member of it's board... (and an MP)

Shall I go on??

The Stonehenge Tunnel was declined about 15 years ago as being cost prohibitive, would lose the site revenue (people wouldn't be invited to stop, but to keep on going through at high speed), and cause even greater damage than the present road already does.
