Hank Snow recorded a SLEW of them old tearjerkers... The Drunkard's Son, The Drunkard's Child, Nobody's Child...etc.

I was kinda hoping somebody else would post them. If not I will later.

In an old dusty attic of a tenement house
I happened to wander one day,
And there on the rafters 'mid shavings and chips,
A drunkard's poor little boy lay.

"Oh, why are you lying up here in the cold?
What makes you lie on this hard bed?"
"My father's a drunkard and he beat me today.
My darling old mother is dead.

"I'm hiding from father and, please, sir, don't tell.
He beat me 'cause I would not steal.
He said he would kill me the next time I failed,
And I'm so afraid, sir, he will."

"I'm leaving you here, son," I sadly replied,
"But I will be back right away."
But when I returned to the attic, I found
That Jesus had been there that day.

The chips and the shavings were there as before,
As the little boy lay on his bed.
With tears on his cheeks and his hands at his side,
The poor little fellow was dead.

A picture of mother lay close to his heart,
A faint little note by his head.
As I opened the paper, my eyes filled with tears,
For these were the words that I read:

"I'm hiding with Jesus across the divide.
With dear mother forever I'll dwell;
And thank you, dear mister, for your kindness to me,
And now it's all right if you tell."

From one Newfoundlander to another
Enjoy!

Just a bit more Hank Snow trivia before we let this one go. It was recorded in Montreal at the end of the session of December 17-18, 1945. He did 12 songs in those two days, with Eugene 'Johnny' Beaudoin on steel guitar and Teddy Miller on bass. Just A Faded Petal From A Beautiful Bouquet, My Sweet Texas Bluebonnet Queen, and Brand On My Heart all came from this session.

Information from the Bear Family 5 CD collection, Hank Snow, The Yodeling Ranger, The Canadian Years, 1936-1947.

BRAND ON MY HEART by Hank Snow

My troubled old heart dear is beating with pain,
You've gone and I know I'm the one who's to blame,
You've gone in the world to make a new start,
And left as a memory your brand on my heart.

They say you were crying while packing your things
And left me your locket and bright golden rings,
The plans for your future I've broken apart
Now all I have left is your brand on my heart.

You say you are sorry it ended this way
And that I'll find someone to love me someday,
Another to cherish the love you once knew,
But, darling, that someone can only be you.

The flowers you planted, that rose you loved best,
Its dark velvet petals are now closed in death
The birds have hushed singing. It all plays a part
To deepen the wound of your brand on my heart.

I'm appealing to you for forgiveness today
For all of your tears, darling, I've had to pay,
If you'll just forgive me, we'll make a new start
And no more will I carry your brand on my heart.

I know a bunch of his songs; that's what I was raised on. If you are looking for one and don't find it, let me know.

Guest: BMI.com indicates that Hank Snow wrote THE DRUNKARD'S SON. Since he was born in 1914, we can assume he wrote it after 1922, which is the cutoff date for public domain in the US. Therefore it is NOT public domain.
