I heard John sing his song called Percy the Peeler From Potterton. Sadly John died around 1967-8.Can any one find any trace of his writings ?

Try looking for Jon Rennard - that's how it was spelled.

A few years ago I was playing at The Cross Keys in Uppermill and sang a song of Johns. It turned out that his girl-friend at the time of the crash actually ran the folk club. We had a good chat mainly about the times I saw him at the then Church Inn folk club in Prestwich. I can't recall her name but maybe Jim Schofield who now runs the club can help. 01457-833897

Jon Rennard, a fine singer and guitarist, was indeed based in Leeds, he died in a car crash in the early seventies. He had a wide repertoire of songs and amusing introductions. He was a good friend of, and was encouraged by Yorkshire Relish (Derek & Dorothy Elliott) A favourite song he performed was Jumbo the Elephant...written by Leon Rosselson, I think.

And I'm remembering them too.
Hey, that means 'Little Jon' Rennard and Samantha Atkinson, their respective children, must be nearing 40.
I wonder if they know how much some of us left think of their long-departed fathers.
Jon's granddaughter came onto Mudcat once.
I wonder if Sami (who was once my niece-in-common-law) might be out there?

I always remember them, particularly on this day each year.

It was lovely to see Jon's granddaughter's (Carrie Rennard's) post on the other Jon Rennard thread in February; perhaps we'll hear from her again.

It would be nice if the 2 threads could be put together.

Jon also played with the Jug & Bottle Washers Jug Band right up until his tragic accident. I have some recordings and photos of Jon with the Jug Band including Whitby Folk festival 1968 and a tour of Ireland and a Radio Leeds recording of "shine" introduced by Bob Pegg.

Jon lived with Marsh and they were both killed in September 1971 in a car crash. Two records were released, Brimbledon Fair and The Parting Glass. Their deaths were the worst day of my life as I was very close to both of them especially Marsh.

We used to book John at the Kennet Folk club at the Hinds Head Pub
In Aldermaston village Berkshire in 1970/71 and we all became very good friends with him
The guy that ran the club with me Les.
John always stayed with him and Pam when on tour down south and they named their first son after him
We booked John at the first Reading Folk Festival Along with Dave & Tony Arthur and others 69/70 I can't remember
As you all probably Know John Liked 20s Music and somewhere there is a photo of John and my self playing together (Sweet Georgia Brown)
Happy days I wish he were still with us

We also have this LP, and are wondering if we can put it onto a DVD, recently went to the Thompson's Arms folk night at Flaxton, it brought back memories. We used to listen to Jon in the late 60's at the folk clubs in Leeds, The Grove, The Peel and The RAOB club in North Street, were on holiday in Cornwall when we heard of his accident. Is it possible to get the Brimbledon Fair recording still (preferably not vinyl as we don't have anything to play them on).

It isn't possible to get either of John's LPs now although I have seen 2 copies of "Brimbledon Fair" on ebay in the past few years.

I have both LPs and have put mine onto CDs, for playing in the car,using a Numark USB turntable and Audacity software.

Just to add my own mini-tribute so many years on. Jon was, if memory serves, the very first professional artist I booked early in the life of a folk club at the Queen's Head in Shildon, Co Durham. It was my home town and the venue represented a slight moving up in the world from the smaller pub room where the club had started.

Up until Jon's appearance, again from memory, we had made do with floor singers.

Jon was, of course, head and shoulders above anyone we had seen at either place. It wasn't a great club by any means - I had more success later at bigger and better pub venues in the larger towns of Darlington and Bishop Auckland - but Jon gave us a night to remember and may have filled me with enough enthusiasm to persevere.

Iremember jon at the peel pub in boar ;ane in the mid &late 60s, he had a lovely gentle voice different to a lot of singers at the time

HI, I saw Jon a few times at the Ring 'o bells fok club in Bath. Absolutely loved him. I have his records on vinyl and one on a cassette. It is possible that the powers that be at Fellside Recordings have his masters asd i once communicated with them and as I recall they had other things to do at the time. Looking at their current catalogue, littered with many successful new artists it may be that these songs never see the light of day again.

John Rennard, lovely man. He used to play in the Lowther Hotel then we moved to Hull Road,as the York Folk Centre.

John was an excellent guitarist and singer, lovely nature. We all missed him when he died in that car crash. Jed and Jim (brother and I) are from Glasgow. John went up there for some gigs, and struggled to get on with the glaswegians. He was gald to get back to Yorkshire.
They could not understand him, nor viki versa.
God bless you John, catch up with you up there some day, will bring my guitar. Jed Morris x
