Dicho did a wonderful job of transcribing almost all the songs spirituals from the U.S. Library of Congress recordings of the John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip. I'll post the index in this thread. If you would like to discuss any of the songs, please do so in the thread for that song.

Not all the songs, Joe! Just those that were identified as spirituals. There is still a five-foot shelf of material left in the 1939 trip, on a large variety of subjects.
The site is well worth investigating because loads of ideas are there for the singer, performer, or anyone just plain interested in folk songs and how people change them around. A real portmanteau!
The materials are also a record of a culture that pretty well disappeared just a decade later, with WW II the disruptive agent.

You're right, Dicho. There are 686 songs in the Lomax collection. You transcribed 77 of them.
Get back to work.
[grin]
Thanks a lot, Dicho.

Notes. A couple listed as not posted, were posted and are on the posted list. My poor editing.
The very popular Jonah (and the Whale) is better represented elsewhere, by a wide spectrum of gospel singers, and the Lomax recording is hard to understand. Not yet in DT!.
Others were fragmentary, not understandable, or offered ideas better presented in other songs.

Of course these will all appear as clickable links in the African American Spirituals Permathread, too, with the rest of the spirituals posted at Mudcat-- as soon as I get that caught up.
