Subject: Opinions, Heartland, an Appalachian... From: Steve Latimer Date: 04 Dec 01 - 10:14 PM I have seen Heartland, An Appalachian Anthology. It features Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Mike Marshall, Mark O'Connor, Allison Krauss doing trad Appalachian stuff with guests appearances by James Taylor and classical players Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and Edgar Meyer. I was wondering if it was any good. I'm a little frightened by cross genre albums like this. |

Subject: RE: Opinions, Heartland, an Appalachian... From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Dec 01 - 11:02 PM Dunno' about the album Steve, but I saw a 20 minute (or so) thing on Discovery with Mark O'Connor and a classical violinist along with Hammered Dulcimer and it was spectacular...........I know what you mean though. If you buy it let me know......I trust your taste. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Opinions, Heartland, an Appalachian... From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Dec 01 - 11:15 PM Mark O'Connor is in a class by himself. Spectacular is right!. Some of these cross-dressing albums are good and some only 50%. Bell and Meyer, although classically trained, respect all kinds of music. So does YoYo but he sometimes stumbles in these albums. I haven't heard this one yet. |

Subject: RE: Opinions, Heartland, an Appalachian... From: GUEST,BigDaddy Date: 05 Dec 01 - 12:38 AM It all depends on what you mean by "good," Steve. It will contain a whole lot of talent and I would guess fine production values. I would also guess, judging by the lineup of talent that it will be a respectful, technically flawless appreciation of the traditional music of the region. If you're looking for an album that will transport you to the southern Appalachians, it will probably fail, except in a "Windham Hill" sort of way. |

Subject: RE: Opinions, Heartland, an Appalachian... From: Steve Latimer Date: 05 Dec 01 - 08:23 AM I'll do a little more digging on this one before forking out my twenty. Big Daddy, I don't expect it to whisk me back to the Appalachians, but I fear that it may not have any of the spirit of the original style. Maybe I'll check my local library first to see if they have it, they do have my favourite cross genre album, Pat Boone's Heavy Metal album. Now you know why 'Spaw trusts my judgement.
