Thanks, Rick. I've had an Oscar Schmidt mandolin for years, but mine is from the Far East. OS is now part of Washburn, by all accounts.

Frank.... Are you talking about an old Schmidt instrument or one of the new ones kinda' like this one? It's a kind of apples and oranges thing.

To complicate things, there are several different periods of the Oscar Schmidt brand name. Before 1939 there was the Original Oscar Schmidt Company, which made the original Stella, Sovereign, and Galliano guitars, of the types played by Leadbelly, Blind Willie McTell, Barbeque Bob, and countless others in the Blues and Old Time Music areas. These were not expensive guitars but were not the plywood doorstops that were made under the Stella name by the Harmony Company after WWII. Check this out. Stellaguitars.com

The current Oscar Schmidt (Washburn) catalog includes two steel string guitars with solid spruce tops - OF4S and OG4S, if I remember rightly. All the rest appear to be laminates. They seem to be quite well made. Try www.oscarschmidt.com.

Rick, that is a great site. Wish I had an extra $12,000 bucks laying around for that 12 string. I wonder how much they keep in the register at the local convenience store.............hhmmmmmmmmmm?
