Subject: The Quiet Man, Paris From: CET Date: 14 Dec 01 - 06:05 AM Charmion and I got back from Paris the day before yesterday. I had asked for information about folk music in Paris. As usual, Mudcat came through. Skipjack K8 put me on to a little Irish bar called The Quiet Man, 5 rue des Haudriettes, in the 3rd arrondissement. This turned out to be one of the high points of our trip. They have music every night of the week, including an open session on Saturday, and a singers' session on Tuesday. We sang a lot of songs, and met a lot of new friends. Eoghan Lucey, the owner, is a hell of a good singer with a great repertoire of traditional songs. The music happens downstairs. The bar itself is upstairs (great selection of Irish whiskey). Highly recommended. Edmund |

Subject: RE: The Quiet Man, Paris From: Ringer Date: 22 Feb 02 - 12:10 PM I had every intention to do so, but in the end didn't make it to the Quiet Man. I'm no advocate of taking England with me when I go abroad, but I watched the England/Ireland rugby match last Saturday at the Frog & Rosbif, which, when it opened, purported to be the only English Pub in Paris (it's now been joined by others in the same chain). No folk (so far as I'm aware), but they have live music, including jazz. It's an absolutely splendid pub (apart from the prices: at Eur4.00 during happy-hour, it's certainly the most expensive pint I've ever bought (c£2.50) -- Eur5.50 (£3.50) normally), with the beer brewed on the premises. I drank the Inseine (geddit?), which was excellent: a fine, well-balanced beer with a delightful flowery finish (although served a bit on the cold side). Similar in flavour (not in colour) to the beer brewed at The Fat Cat in Sheffield. Watch the "London porter", though: like Guinness, it's under Nitrogen top-pressure. The place on Sat afternoon was absolutely packed; smokers had to hold their fags above their heads between drags. But there were two rugby matches on simultaneously: the English & Irish were watching one on the big screen at the end of the bar, and the French and Welsh were watching the other on three smaller TVs down the side. A most entertaining afternoon, made all the better by Ireland's fight-back in the game's last quarter. Well worth a visit, even if there's no rugby. |
