Just to be a little pedantic and picky, Danny (who I'm proud to say is a good friend of mine) spells his name Danny Carnahan. But yes, he writes damn fine songs.

From: GUEST

Watching a video online, I got these chords.
G                                       Am                            Bm                      C
Welcome in my thirsty fellows, hang your hats inside the door
               G                         Am                                 Bm                        C
If we’re only packed to bursting, then there’s surely room for more
            G                           Am                           Bm                   C
We’ll deny the cold of winter, we’ll have only song and cheer
             G                      Am                C                            G
As we gather here together in the threshold of the year.

Chorus:
G                                                       C                         G                            C
And here’s a dram to warm the piper, here’s a dram to warm the hall
G                                             Am                            Bm   C    D         G
Here’s a dram to raise the rafters. And here’s long life to you all

Oooh... d'oh... chords eh... ummm... well... I do it in DADGAD, capoed 3rd, to put it in the key of F

The 2nd half of the verse and the chrous have the same chord progression...

Ummm... lemme see if this helps....

(D)Welcome in my thirsty (G)fellow
hang your (D)hat inside the (G)door
If we're (D)only packed to (Em)bursting
then there's (G)surely room for (A)more
We'll (D)deny the cold of (G)winter
We'll have (D)only song and (G)cheer
As we (D)gather here (Em)together
in the (G)first cold (A)of the (D)year

Here's a (D)dram to warm the(G) piper
Here's a (D)dram to warm the (G)hall
Here's a (D)dram to raise the (Em)rafters
And here's (G)long life (A)to you (D)all

That's kinda close.. but probably closer to the way I do it lately thn Danny's original version...

Hope it helps at all though...

;-)

verse three is yours? Excellent!

I have great friends that own a family winery, and for New Year's eve they are closed, except for a party of several good friends. I thought this song was perfect for them! Couldn't find my tape of it though, so you are a godsend! Would ya happen to have the chord progression too? Huh, huh, pretty please?

Clinton, have a great Holiday season!

Robin

A DRAM TO WARM THE PIPER
As recorded by Danny Carnahan on "Journeys of the Heart" (1989)

1. Welcome in, my thirsty fellow; hang your hats inside the door.
If we're only packed to bursting then there's surely room for more.
We'll deny the cold of winter; we'll have only song and cheer
As we gather here together in the fresh cold of the year.

CHORUS: And here's a dram to warm the piper; here's a dram to warm the hall.
Here's a dram to raise the rafters and here's long life to you all.

2. Here we tied the knot as lovers; here we raised the toast as friends.
Here we passed along from hand to hand in a dance that never ends.
We'll forget about tomorrow; we're protected from it here
As we drink our fill together from the tankard of the year. CHORUS

3. Though our chosen roads divide us, many miles may come between,
We are once more brought together as if parted we've never been.
We will forge anew our friendship slaked in laughter, song and cheer
As we cleanse our souls together in the first flames of the year. CHORUS

4. Crack the seal off the bottle; light the fire beneath the still.
Let it soak us to the elbows as we mitigate our ills;
For the whiskey is forgiving; it will wash the conscience clear
As we all sink back together in the cradle of the year. CHORUS

what a fantastic song!

;-)

It's been a long time since I listened to Danny's version, but I've been playing the hell out of this song for years and years! It's one of my all time favourites!

I'll be back in 2 minutes, and I'll post the lyrics, with my extra verse included...

Hi

Does anyone have all of the words and chords to "Dram to warm the piper", by Danny Carnaghan?

Also, on his recording, is he playing in standard or open tuning?

Thanks for the info!

Robin
