Subject: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp From: Stewart Date: 17 Dec 01 - 10:47 PM "The first ever Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp, March 21-24, 2002, on beautiful San Juan Island, Washington. This is going to be 4 days of music classes, concerts, dances, sessions, and carrying on, in the spirit of Co.Clare's "Willie Week". " Are any mudcatters planning to go, and does anyone have an idea what it might be like (other than what is on their web page)? Since it is the "first ever," probably no one really knows the answer to the second part. It sounds pretty ambitious. Randal Bays is one of the featured fiddle instructors and "Bridget Fitzgerald has been added for singing and still finalizing pipes and guitar." I'm tempted to go, but... Cheers, S. in Seattle

Subject: RE: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Dec 01 - 01:15 AM San Juan Island is a beautiful place; that photo at the link looks more like July than March. Spring is a beautiful, if chilly, season up there. Considering the high prices of things out on the Island, the prices of the event and lodging don't look too high for the time and place involved. If the National Park Service (part of the Dept. of Interior) web sites ever come back online, you can visit the park here. Another site that is working now is this one.

Subject: RE: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp From: Stewart Date: 29 Mar 02 - 07:43 PM Just a follow-up. I went and the camp was good. About 80 participants. Great faculty - James Kelly and Randal Bays on fiddle; Roger Landes, bouzouki; Tom Creegan, uilleann pipes; Catherine McEvoy, flute and whistle; John Williams, button box and concertina; Bridget Fitzgerald, singing. Good food (an important thing) and facilities. Even the weather co-operatied - we arrived with about 1" of snow on ground (quite unusual for late March!), but then it became partly sunny (no rain) and warm by the time we left. Then back to Seattle with cold and rain! I highly recommend this camp for next year. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp From: Miken Date: 29 Mar 02 - 08:43 PM Stewart, thanks for the update. I was considering going, if my new box was delivered in February as anticipated. Unfortunately it didn't ( and still hasn't!), but I'm planning to be there next year for sure. Friday Harbor is where I grew up. How was the attendance at the public performances? |
Subject: RE: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp From: Miken Date: 29 Mar 02 - 08:46 PM Any other mudcatters there? Mike |
Subject: RE: Friday Harbor Irish Music Camp From: Stewart Date: 30 Mar 02 - 11:56 AM Mike, Friday Harbor has a beautiful community theatre built in 1989, which seats about 280 people. It was sold out for the public concert - apparently it was the cultural event of the week. The pubs were full for the sessions, although one unexplicitly closed at 11 pm. Post-session jams went on into the wee hours. "Any other mudcatters there?" Not that I knew, but out of 80 people there had to be a few. Hope to see you next year. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
