Subject: Lyr Add: As-salaam aleikum
From: Haruo
Date: 24 Dec 01 - 02:13 AM

A week ago, on the festival of 'Id al-Fitr (Arabic for "Breakfast" - sorry, I was kidding) our Seattle Council of Churches mosquesitting duties came to an end. So now I have posted a couple of songs that came to me in that process on my website, and thought I would share them here. The first is As-salam' alejkum (tune: Old Time Religion):

As-salaam aleikum, as-salaam aleikum,
As-salaam aleikum!
U aleikum salaam!

(which is ever so slightly reminiscent of the Israeli round, found in many current Christian hymnals of the highbrow varieties, e.g. the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal, Shalom, Chaverim)

to be continued...

Subject: Lyr Add: Shalom Chaverim

Shalom Chaverim

Shalom chaverim, shalom chaverot,
Shalom, shalom!
Lehitraot, lehitraot,
Shalom, shalom!

literalistically, "Peace, comrades, peace, she-comrades [?! comradettes??], peace, peace! Au revoir, auf Wiedersehen, peace, peace!"

Liland

PS: My apologies if that is already in the DT; I didn't see it. A search for "Shalom" only turned up "Dona Dona".

Subject: Lyr Add: Allah (God)'s chilluns got wings
From: Haruo
Date: 24 Dec 01 - 02:29 AM

and finally, to "I got a robe":

Allah (God)'s chilluns got wings

  1. I got wings; you got wings;
    Allah (God)'s chilluns got wings!
When we get to hebben gonna
    strap on our wings'n gonna

    flap round Allah (God)'s hebben.
    Hebben, hebben.

Everybody talkin' 'bout hebben ain't* goin' dere,
    Hebben, hebben.

Gonna zoom through Allah (God)'s hebben.

  2. I got wingtips; you got wingtips;
    Allah (God)'s chilluns got wingtips!
When we get to hebben gonna
    put on our wingtips, gonna

waltz all over Allah (God)'s hebben.
    Hebben, hebben.

Everybody talkin' 'bout hebben ain't* goin' dere,
    Hebben, hebben.

Gonna prance through Allah (God)'s hebben.
* * it's just a song; my personal belief is that, ultimately, heaven is for all. If you are uncomfortable with the exclusivity of the song as written, try substituting "be" for "ain't".
Okay, so you try sitting in front of a mosque all by your lonesome from midnight to six am and see what it does to your creative juices! ;-)

Liland

PS: I'll admit I also sang a lot of Christian hymns that morning (mainly "Come Away to the Skies", "Come, O thou Traveler Unknown", "His Voice as the Sound of the Dulcimer Sweet", and "How Firm a Foundation", plus several runs through as many verses of Abdul Abulbul Amir as I could recollect. But I had to get off my butt and go down on the public sidewalk to sing the overtly Christian stuff, so as not to violate the intent of the sign over the door (see link above).

Does anyone have an origin or early source for this song? How old is it?
