I've learnt that it's good to be realistice about these matters ;~)!

It may be instructive to refer to this thread from last year.

I now weigh 197 pounds. This means I have had a net loss of 38 pounds. While I haven't quite achieved my long-term goal weight, I feel that I have managed to do well in keeping my resolution from last year. A portion of my resolution for the coming year is much the same but I have one other resolution as well.

For most of my life I have detested my brother. He is one of the very few people on this earth about whom I have felt this way. I am finally coming to realize that he is helpless to be otherwise. Like all of the rest of us, he has been guessing at how to be; how to act within our society. Unfortunately, his guesses appear to have missed the target. The saddest part is that he seems to remain oblivious to this fact. He continues acting in non- or even anti-social ways and doing what some would view as thoughtless, hurtful acts without any appearance of regret. I am starting to understand that in most cases, he truly does not recognize his errors. The term "thoughtless acts" describes much of his behavior in an extremely accurate way. He seems incapable of thinking these things all the way through before doing them and causing pain to those around him.

I am sure a professional clinician of some sort could place a neat label on his particular style of behavior. That is not without its value, I suppose. But my point is that I am finally realizing that my emotional reaction to him serves no useful purpose. It makes far more sense to use that energy to try to find a way to understand him and perhaps, in time, to find it within myself to forgive him for being what he is.

This, then is the main feature of my resolution for this year. I will spend the next few months trying to find ways to better understand my brother's behavior rather than to condemn it without further examination. Perhaps through better understanding, I can change how I feel toward him.

Never resolutions. But certainly hopes, and sometimes even plans.

Here's my hope from last year...

For 2001. Boy, that's a tough one. I honestly don't know in which direction I need to move during the upcoming year. So I guess my first goal is to try to get some clarity about what comes next.

I believe I've got some clarity now about the direction I want my life to take, at least for the next year or so. So my hope and plan for 2002 is to continue moving in that direction. Wish me luck.

(p.s. it doesn't involve ferrets)

It makes far more sense to use that energy to try to find a way to understand him and perhaps, in time, to find it within myself to forgive him for being what he is. That's where I finally got with one of my brothers, too. As soon as I became willing to forgive him (well before I actually did)he lost his power over me. He still isn't a nice guy, though. :)

I don't really do Christmas but I love a new year so I will say, somewhat prematurely, Allan, have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Not to make any resolutions...that is my resolution! :D

What works for me is to not make promises once a year, as that seems to make me feel badly if I slip.

I try to make adjustments and make progress all year round every year, and to be willing to forgive myself when I fail, to get back up off my arse, and to keep plugging away.

That seems to work better for me! :D

Well, for the year 2000, I resolved to write a Christmas/Yule story that had been lingering in my head for ages, and get it into a finished enough form to give it as a Christmas gift for my neighbors... And I succeeded (secretly slipped a copy into their mailboxes on Christmas Eve). Yay!

For 2001, I resolved to organize a storytelling discussion group/workshop, and I succeeded in that, too -- we've had 3 sessions already, and 9 more to go. Only a few participants, each time, but those who've come thank me afterward, so...

...Say what you will about the artificiality of New Years' resolutions, I, personally, find it very satisfying to look back at the year just passed and be able to definitively say: "The world (or 'my life') will be different from here on, because I did this this year."

Not sure what my resolution for 2002 will be, yet, but my experience from the last couple of years shows me that I do better with projects that lead to tangible results (and it doesn't hurt if the projects are fun, to boot!)

To all Mudcatters everywhere (and to their friends and kin) may your labors in 2002 yeild a sweet harvest!

Well, Red Eye, (and sorry in advance for the long post), thanks for making me think about this. It took me back to a set of thoughts that have proved very important to me over the last year or so. Reading the piece again just now made me cry, thinking of all that has happened since I first posted this in a thread here: NotMusic: I'd pick more daisies.... A big shock was the date I posted it, just a week before I left my husband and family home... hmmm, very significant.

I'd Pick More Daisies......

If I had my life to live over, I'd try to make more mistakes next time. I would relax, I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would be crazier, I would be less hygienic. I would take more chances. I would take more trips. I would climb more mountains, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones.

You see, I am one of those people who lives prophylactically and sanely and sensibly, hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I have had my moments, and if I had to do it all over again, I'd have more of them. In fact I'd try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead each day.

I have been one of those people who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a gargle, a raincoat, and a parachute. If I had it to do over again, I would go places and do things and travel lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over, I would start bare-footed earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would play hooky more. I wouldn't make such good grades except by accident. I would ride on more merry-go-rounds. I'd pick more daisies.

Well, in the last year or so I've taken risks, been places and done things that I never would have done before. I've seen some beautiful sunsets, and I have plans to travel in the coming year...

Well, you asked! *grin*

Noreen

Noreen, I've lived the life that the author of your piece would live if she had it to do over. I've got to admit, what with the wear and tear on the body and all, I think I'd like to aim for a nice sort of middle ground. Don't know if I'm capable of it, though.

I will fess up to precisely what I resolve to do this coming year.

I resolve to be on a CD released in the 2002 year. Not too difficult, considering that I've already put in several hours in the studio and we're going in to mix in February.

I resolve to be in my new band, work in my new band, and to otherwise do everything I can to enjoy and further this wacky thing called music we do.

I resolve to drink. Be it water, beer, or gin & tonic, bring it on.

I resolve to be moderate in all things, including moderation (see above).

I resolve to be polite, try within the best of my abilities not to be an asshole, and when I realize that despite my best intentions that I've failed in this, apologize when possible, grovel when needed, and run when necessary.

I resolve that this year shall be unlike any other year. I do this mainly because it happens anyway, and SOMEONE has to do it.

And finally, I resolve that no matter what else happens, no matter how the shows go, no matter how the band goes, I'll keep on doing what I feel I need to. Or not.

To keep in touch with friends -- even if they don't have e-mail.

And try to get back in contact with friends I've lost touch with.

Oh, and the on-going resolution originally made a few years ago -- to throw something out (or dispose of it somehow) every day. Zen and the Art of Housecleaning!

My resolutions?

Organize the music for Hero6.com (I just recently got promoted to music admin there, and am still very happy about that.)

Do the best I can with three different creative projects.

Start creating a foundation for myself.

Study web design and development, and implement any improvements on my three sites.

Keep composing and recording the music for my second CD.

Remember to smell the roses!

I resolve to follow these encouraging words from the very last paragraph of the autobiography of the late British actor, Kenneth Williams (a.k.a. Rambling Syd Rumpo)-

"Just because you've made your bed, that doesn't mean you have to lie in it - watched kettles do boil, and rolling stones do gather moss, and the man who cannot change his mind is in danger of losing it. We have thousands of second chances, just so long as we wonder at the sunset, the stars in the heavens, and the promise of the new day."

Right, now I've read that, I can handle 2002....!

I intend to sharpen up on my cross-burning skills. I was a bit slow last Saturday night, almost got caught.

I also intend to eliminate my cigarette-burning skills; they are catching up with me.

And I am sending Spaw a manual on eliminating his nose-burning fart-burning skills. The poor thing keeps blisters on his Ahian ass. My heart bleeds for him.

I have a friend in the Army. In the weeks following 9/11 I was a complete wreck. I didn't hear from him for awhile so I was especially concerned. Finally I got an e-mail. He said, everything's fine, I'm just working extra hard right now, if anything changes I promise I'll tell you. Did anyone ever tell you that you worry too much?

I resolved right then I was not going to worry too much anymore. So far, so good. A little anxiety can be helpful once in awhile, but it ain't no use worrying about things you have no control over.

Or things that are so fleeting --- like the guy who cuts you off in traffic, or the person with the ringing phone/crying child at the restaurant/movie theatre... all those people will be out of your life in a few minutes.

A local church lately had the following message on their marquee: "What were you worrying about one year ago today?"

Hell if I know.

Don't be SILLY! If there was any remote chance of keeping them they wouldn't need resolutions.

Having said that, I'm going to resolve to be an ASSHOLE next year and not to let anyone con me or take advantage of me in any way, like they did this year.

My resolution is to organize my STUFF – assemble shelving, and get things out of the cardboard boxes from the liquor store (where they've been since I moved in, an embarrassingly long time ago), and put things on display. I'm tired of not being able to find anything, and I'm tired of living in an apartment that makes me look like I have a drinking problem!!!

BTW, I'd also like to lose 70 or 75 pounds. Maybe if I lift enough STUFF I'll burn off the fat! But I don't hope to lose all that weight in one year (that wouldn't be healthy). Losing ANY of that weight would be satisfactory! So I resolve to lose SOME weight.

Finally, I resolve not to let myself get perpetually angry or depressed over my father's declining mental health. I'm watching it eat away at my brother (the primary "caregiver"), and it's all too easy to get caught up in my brother's feelings until I've made them my own, but I recognize that anger or sadness won't change the situation. So I'm going to do my best to accept the situation as a part of my father's life, and mine.

Oh yeah, and I resolve to copyright some of my songs. I'm not ready to resolve to make a CD yet!

Sharon

Sharon --

As I understand it, anything you write is already copyrighted, automatically, as soon as you get it outside your head in some form. At least, that's the way it works with the straight written word.

Is it different for music?

I'm going to drink whiskey like Doug R.

I'm going to catch a big fish.

At home:

I'm going to take my kids to a batting cage.

I'm going to take my wife to a wine-tasting event.

I'm going to smoke that big fish.

At work:

I'm going to clean up my messy desk.

I'm going to catch a big fish.

And put his ass in prison.

* I'm going to record a CD -- or two.
* I'm going to learn many more wonderful songs this year. I may actually write one or two.
* I'm going to have as much fun as I can, in whatever circumstances I find myself.
* I'm going to stay healthy, no matter what.
* I'm going to stop saying my guitar playing sucks and start getting good enough to stop feeling apologetic all the time.
* I'm going to ride my bikes as much as I possibly can. * I'm going to go either to the Folk Song Getaway, or to the U.K. to stay on Mudcateers' sofas and sing in their pubs, or to Crete to help friends with their olive harvest. Even if I can't afford it, I'm going to travel.
*I'm going to finish my book, at last, and find the perfect publisher for it.
* I'm going to continue to love my job and be grateful for the opportunity to make a positive contribution to people through the work I do.
* I will maybe, possibly, perhaps consider the possibiltiy of maybe finding a partner, lover and pal -- all in the VERY SAME MAN!!!
* I will have the most awesome garden I've ever grown.
*I will be grateful
* I will be kind.
* I will rowdy.

My resolutions for the New Year.. are going to be to sing more, write more, and not EVER again, do things I dont want to do!!!!,( unless it pleases or amuses me to)
I have had my nose rubbed very hard in some very personal shortcomings this year past, and I hope the lessons are learned. I nearly lost some close friends that really matter thru being stupid and stiff necked, and I hope I am correcting this already. Learned a little about caring and letting go without bitterness and pain, but trying to do what is right, no matter what,
I met and made some lovely new ( some not new, but unmet)friends face to face, at home and in the US, managed to offer some help, a few times, and was helped ( embarrassed but helped) in my turn, and I thank Max and the Mudcat for making much of this happen and I am reminded that
"When you are in the earth
There's time to rest
Too much regretting Brings pains in your chest Carpe diem is our watch cry,
we will be sensible bye and bye"
