Subject: What key does your car horn honk in?
From: SharonA

Here's a bit of meaningless fluff to clutter up your brain for the weekend:

I read a snippet of trivia this morning that says, "Most American car horns honk in the key of F." Is it true? What about yours?

I'm not sure about mine. Unfortunately, I don't have perfect pitch and, since it's raining here this morning, I didn't take my guitar out to my car to compare notes (so to speak). I do know that my car horn has two tones, and that they're either a 3rd and a 5th of a major chord, or a 1st and a 3rd of a minor chord. I'll post the actual key(s) when I've had a chance to check.

Eagerly awaiting your replies! ;^)

Sharon

Is there a key of obnoxious? Sounds like someone skritching chalk on a blackboard. At least I can hear this one. Last one couldn't be heard with the engine running.

A study said Most American car horns honk in the key of F???

Are you sure it didn't say "Most Americans honk their F-in' car horns...;-)"

(Ducking and running)

My mate Mike used to tune his guitar to the pitch his window vibrated at when a large vehicle went by. Didn't take him too long as he lived on a main road but he was a bugger to play along with - we never did find the key!

Cheers

I've seen TV advertisements that used different car horns to play a tune.

Imagine the parking lot (or car park) melodeon. We'd need to know what notes our horns played, and park them in appropriate sections. We'd need a conductor.

I'd suggest we run right out and discover what notes our car horns play, come back and post the notes. Someone could find a tune that could be adapted to those notes. The next big event, we could all play a tune. Gives new meaning to the term "parking lot jam."

Maybe we could work up "Taps" for Naemanson's wedding?

Or "Here Comes the Bride," for that matter. We'd probably need a bike horn or two for the high notes...

Begging your pardon for lowering the tone of this erudite conversation ...

The other night I broke wind. Not something I am given to do in the manner of a slob ... it was one that "leaked out" when I wasn't expecting. Honest!

"Top A!" said my missus who has perfect pitch, and strapped on her accordion and played said note to prove her point!

Don't know, but it's really wussy! We have a big car (estate) and you'd think it would have a meaty horn, but no. Like an angels' fart is this horn. I make more noise yelling out the window! My car was a Lada Estate and honked in Eb. I think Fords are F, Nissan are G or G#.

As far as I can tell, I've never farted in A.

Then there was the gentleman who made his living as a street entertainer by farting car makes for folks. One day he was asked to do a Japanese make, but it wouldn't work. He tried and tried but just couldn't get the right make. Eventually he gave up and went to see his doctor, who just happened to be Japanese. He explained his predicament.

'Ah, honorable gentleman to be drinking this foreign French drink, one in morning, one in evening, problem will go away, $75 please'.

The street entertainer went away, got a bottle of the strange drink and started to drink, one slug in the morning, one slug in the evening. A week later, he tried to fart the Japanese car, and success! Perfect!!! He was so excited that he went straight round to his doctor.

'Doctor, doctor, that was a fantastic cure, it worked miracles, what was it??'

'Ah,' said the doctor, 'strange foreign drink called absinthe, and absinthe make the fart go Honda!'

Well, I took the tuner out and honked the horn. Unfortunately, I am going to have to hold the horn down for a bit to get a reading and Mr. is asleep. It's also dark outside so I don't want to annoy the neighbors. Dark also makes it difficult to read the tuner. I'll try to remember tomorrow in daylight..........what a weird thing to be obsessing about. I need a life.

Many (maybe most or possibly all) car horns as rated as specific notes, though I don't know how accurate they are. Two-horn cars have a high horn and a low one. It seems to me that some of them use harmonious notes and some use dissonant notes, but I wouln't swear to it as I never made a point of studying that.

The ignition key.... Well, I drive a '63 Volkswagen and the horn was long ago wired thru a fuse circuit that isn't activated until the car is running.... Hey, didn't have to say.... Nevermind... F, very flat, at best...

At the moment my car doesn't honk in any key! The key in question was left at the bank, the bank closed before I realized said key was missing ... and on it goes ... my life!

LL (singing in the key of "F" ... for forgetful!)

F is it? and does if it is tooted thrice does that spell out F off, F off, F off?
Mine? in the key of H. The wheels are A flat, the door lock is stuck so its a broken key, but me I sing in C major mostly, though down the Great North Road it is the key of A1, and when I turn left at Milton Keynes it becomes B minor. The hitch hiker is an augmented 7th.

My new car has an automatic locking-unlocking remote control device that honks whenever you press it, or whenever the thing gets stuck in your pocket. I'm not sure what key it is, but chanteyranger has just favored me with opinion that it was a chihuahua in a previous life.

On another note (tee hee), singer-songwriter Michael Smith used to tune his guitar to the Miami telephone dial tone, which he said was D.
