Now, then, if you really, really want to do something special for all of us, if we REALLY can't convince you that you're doing more than enough already... well, okay, how about moving the "Clear Entries" button somewhere else besides right next to the "Submit Message" button, where it can be accidentally clicked after composing a lovingly crafted thesis? (I speak from experience... actually, experiences too numerous to mention!) (I know I'm not the only one who does that!) *bigger G*

Well, what's different is Mudcat doesn't take the contributions of singers and musicians and squirrel 90% of the stuff away in a national attic where only DC'ers can get at it. I love what the LoC has done and continues to try to do but it has done a thoroughly crappy job of being a real national resource.

This glorious Mudcat, and some similar specialty sites, is making music and information available to the people without costing them a fortune in phone tag, postage, fees, time and travel, or without turning them off or turning them down completely. The 'folk' finally have a way to share freely, independent of time and geography.

Won't grant money wind up hemming in and closing down the process like it has for many institutions--I can see the correctness police moving in now--you can't say that, you can't think that, you can't hire him. Keeping all the money and power with 'the folk' would be better than scoring grants that come with strings.

That said, it's Max's site, so whatever he wants to do is extra cool with me!

Slight thread creep from one of those lucky DCers who gets to use the Library of Congress. First point: they don't give grants, so we need to help Max look elsewhere for support.

Second point, to Patty: Do a little digging. The resource is getting more and more national all the time. Check out the American Folklife Center's website at www.loc.gov/folklife

Many of the collections are available online now -- manuscripts, photographs, even whole collections of thematic material. It's not everything, but it's more than any one human being I know can get through. Tremendous stuff there. Try the American Memory project. Try Local Legacies. Try the wonderful folklife curriculum materials that have been developed as part of the Montana Heritage project. Great, useful stuff.

The Folklife Reading Room, which houses the physical collections, has a staffed reference desk which is available to answer questions from the public. Call [phone]. They're helpful and knowledgeable folk -- no voicemail here.

Lest you think I'm a staff member of the Library paid to write nice stuff about them, my only involvement with the LoC and the Folklife Center is a great admiration for and interest in its collections -- and the people who care for them.

And finally, thank you and you're welcome to Max, for all you do and for all the reasons everyone has said. Kathy

Gosh, I missed that last post from Max. Rather take money from the Library Of Congress than us ?? I assume the Library is a Federal institution. I would rather cut off my left nut than take money from the government. 'Round these here parts, if you take money from the government, they own a piece of you, and they try to tell you what to do and what not to do. Better to have one nut than none.
