The word has just gone out: the guest artists at this year's Alaska Folk Festival will be Frankie Gavin and Brian McGrath. Has a 'Catter heard them?

I've listened to some cuts on the 'net and it sounds like their music will be exciting. Anyone have any information on their stage and workshop performances?

Ebbie

Frankie Gavin is the fiddler/driving force behind DeDannan. He's good. Really good.

Frankie Gavin is a hero. Brian McGrath is also in De Danann. He plays piano and banjo.

De Danann are my favourite Irish band. They play mainly straight traditional Irish music but from time to time mix in other genres such as a bit of music hall whimsy (Barney from Killarney, etc) and crossovers to classical and central European music.

Didn't know Brian was now with DeDannan. Surely Alec Finn is still with them? Can't imagine he and Frankie "breaking up".

Frankie Gavin will be in Seattle this Sunday (1/27) at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard. I'll let you know after that.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Stewart, let us know what you think, OK? I expect to be very pleased with the two, but on occasion I have been disappointed with some bands. As it happens, only with American-Irish bands. Bands where the music that comes through has no emotion- no joy, no lilt, no sorrow, no woe, no humo(u)r. At its best- and for me, so far- that's Tommy Sands and Mick Moloney. Of course, my experience is not all that extensive.
