Lane,

I'm not sure what's been published on his newer stuff. I do know you can get an instructional video from Homespun Tapes for his older stuff. Almost without exception, Wicox' guitar is in some altered tuning from DADGAD to open D to open G.

here's a link to their Wilcox page

Thanks, Grin I already have the video on order.... yes, Wilcox uses a variety of tunings - variations on open C from what I've seen... but he uses many, I'm told. Wonderful sound and delightful lyrics....

Tab seems to be hard to find, at least for the songs I'm after....

I've been trying to find or figure out the chords to "Prisoner of War." God, do I love that song. And several others on the Underneath CD, including the one (the name of which I can't remember right now) about never being able to do the right thing with a friend who's an addict or alcoholic. Talk about an arrow straight to the heart.

That's my only Wilcox CD so far, but I've absolutely loved it. Dangerously so, because I'm trying to wean myself away from hitting the One-Click button at Amazon.com.

Wyo Woman,

I've just gotta guess that if you like the "Underneath" CD you really ought to give the others a spin -- I especially like "How Did You Find Me Here" and "Big Horizon". As much as I love his recordings though -- he's an even better live performer. There's a video available that I think to some extent illustrates just how dynamic a performer he is -- and keen observer of the human condition. Live is when I first heard him recite;

The driver right in front of me is making a mistake
He's stopping on the entrance ramp, waiting for his break.
The more he hits his brake, the bigger break he's gonna need
When a little break is plenty if he'd just been up to speed.

So I say...

Go, and you'll find your place
You can't be waiting on the human race
Just move, and you have your chance
You can't be timid in the four-lane dance

Oh...but now he's got it parked there and he's looking back behind
Pleading out the window hoping someone will be kind enough to
...stop
.......and wait
..........and hold the traffic flow.
And still he's not quite confident there's room for him to go

so I say...

Move, and you'll find your place,
Don't be waiting on the human race.
Just GO! You've got your chance,
You can't be timid in the four-lane dance.

You see, the freeway's just a lesson in the way you drive your dreams,
If you think it will be difficult, then difficult it seems,
But if you think it will be easy....well then, easy it will be,
You know a foot between the bumpers has been room enough for me

so I say...

Move, and you'll find your place,
You can't be waiting on the human race.
Just GO! You'll find your chance,
You can't be timid in the
....four
...........lane
..............dance!

His lyrics are certainly something... insightful, so moving.....

If you haven't heard the two that I'm trying to find tab for.... you should. "Kindness" and "Guitar Shopping"....

Anyone have them? Lane

I don't have them, but I agree about the quality of the writing. Thanks for sharing those lyrics -- they pretty much sum up my philosophy.

The other song I was thinking of was "Guilty Either Way." I'm reading this book on songwriting, "Becoming Remarkable," By Harriet Schock. He very much embodies what she talks about there, being intimate and authentic and telling your own story in such a way that it tells a larger human story.

Subject: ADD: Single Candle (David Wilcox)
From: Joe Offer
Date: 04 May 16 - 04:08 PM

David Wilcox writes some really thought-provoking songs. Here's one I came across on YouTube today:

SINGLE CANDLE
(David Wilcox)

At first you couldn't listen, and you held to your suspicion,
'Cause this new point of view seemed bold and strange;
But that simple truth's insistence melted your resistance,
'Till all at once you knew that what you knew must change.

CHORUS
A match will burn for long enough to light a single candle,
A candle only burns until the conversation's done;
And one bright conversation shines a light across a lifetime,
And your quick life had time enough to shine - like the sun.

Your search for easy answers only led to harder questions,
But you rose up when that simple faith fell through.
You were fearless in the rubble, you were shaking the foundations,
'Cause you weren't afraid to shatter what you thought you knew.

CHORUS 2
A match will burn for long enough to light a single candle,
A candle only burns until the conversation's done;
But one bright conversation shines a light across a lifetime,
And every life has time enough to shine - like the sun

A gentle revolution that could change a generation,
Your words can strike a match and light a flame;
And one by one the light spread through the people of a nation,
'Till the tyranny of hate would never be the same.
CHORUS 2

On that balcony in Memphis with a bullet through your body,
We heard you speak a strong and gentle prayer;
They try to kill the future, as if just a gun could stop you,
But the heart of you is beating everywhere.
CHORUS 2
Like the sun, like the sun, but your quick life has time enough to shine - like the sun.

If anyone has any older albums by David Wilcox, 1980's or 1990's, could you please check on the back of album liner notes to see if there is a guy named Nick (I do not know his last name) who might be credited (at that time on early albums) of working for David on arranging tabs, chords, etc. If you do find someone named Nick who was credited could you please provide last name? I do not know what albums if any they would be though.

Thank you,
Lin

Hi, Lin -
I couldn't get up the energy to go looking for the actual CDs because I don't have any idea where I put them. allmusic.com does a pretty good job on credits information for albums, though. I looked through a number of the early A&M and Koch albums and didn't find anybody named Nick.

Hi Joe:

Of course it might be under Nickolas (instead of Nick) but it would be David's early albums -if he did some the tabs/chords for David.

I used to work many years ago during the late 80's & a few years into the 1990's where there was a guy that I just knew as Nick. (not even in my dept.) Large company and it was an office in L.A. with thousands of employees.
I didn't know this guy named Nick very well but somehow we got talking about folk music once in the cafeteria and he mentioned that he did the tabs or maybe it was chords (I can't remember for sure)for David Wilcox.
I left the company in 1995 (in company downsizing) so it has been over 20 years since I was there and no longer in touch with anyone that worked there. And of course since I didn't know his last name it might be hard to find him. I didn't know any of his friends.
I am sure he is no longer there either and probably long retired by now.

OK, Lin. The guilt got to me, since you're such a nice person, and I went through the three shelves where my David Wilcox CDs are supposed to be. Mr. Database tells me I have four Wilcox CDs:
    Home Again
    Big Horizon
    (Mostly) Live-Authorized Bootleg
    How Did You Find Me Here
But I can't find any of them. All are on the A&M label. I really think that allmusic.com has all the credits information I'm likely to find on the CD booklets. Although I'd love to be able to help you, I don't know where to look. Most of my CDs are ripped, and they're stored in a place where the map says, "Beyond here there be dragons."
Sorry I couldn't help.

David Wilcox has a Website with a contact page. Why not contact David and ask? You may get a delightful response. That's the thing about folk musicians - most of them are pleased to correspond with you.

-Joe-
