Come to Brooklyn!

Roustabout, a Maryland-based old-time country music string band, will appear in a New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club Folk Off-Broadway concert at Wunsch Hall, Polytechnic University, in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday evening, February 8, 2002. The concert starts at 8 PM sharp. General admission is $10. New York Pinewoods members pay only $9. Polytechnic students, faculty, and staff will be admitted free.

Roustabout has been around since 1984. The band currently comprises Jim Bollman, Lars Hanslin, Bruce Hutton, Chris Romaine, and Susan Trammell. Together they perform songs and tunes from the rural South from the 1920s and earlier. Roustabout's dedication to keeping old-time country music alive and well seems second only to the good times they have and inspire while making the music happen.

Wunsch Hall, the Polytechnic University student center, is located in Metrotech Center in downtown Brooklyn, NY, easily accessible by public transportation and close to the Marriott Hotel. The nearest subway stops are Lawrence Street on the M, N, and R lines, and Jay Street -- Borough Hall on the A, C, and F lines. Ample free on-street parking is available after 7 PM.

For further information, please call Evy Mayer after 11 AM at (718) 549-1344.

Sounds good but does this mean that Bruce Hutton has left the Double Decker String Band?

Burl, Craig Johnson has moved down to North Carolina to pursue a PhD in Psychology, so Double Decker can't get together as often as their fans (like me) would like. Since Bruce is one of the hardest working musicians in folk music, he's playing with Roustabout and Hesperus and doing school programs and...you get the idea. Double Decker isn't defunct (although they do play what Dick Spottswood has started calling "obsolete music" in reference to his radio show playlist) - they just have longer times between gigs!

And here I was hoping this was going to be a parody of David Allen Coe's sappy "Please come to Boston in the springtime..." something on the order of

Please come to Brooklyn for Yom Kippur
You never write your mother since you moved away
I wait and wait and wait for you to call me
But you say that you're so busy with your job and kids each day
Please come to Brooklyn, he said "No,
Mom, please just let me be!"

Chorus: Well, I don't have one yet, but I guess I've digressed enough.

Hey, everyone in NYC, go hear these guys - they're better than they sound!

Steve, you'll probably get more people to look if you start a new thread with the title "Roustabout in Brooklyn this wknd!". "Come to Brooklyn" is kindof vague. It would be nice if these guys get a good turnout - they're really good.

I thought "Please come to Boston" was Dave Loggins. Coe might be too cool for that. Nice parody, though. Poobs

Thank you. Most of the credit should go to Jerry Epstein, our festival director, who pushed and prodded the Folk Music Society of New York (NY Pinewoods) board of directors until we collectively gave this project the green light. We also need to thank Howard Glasser, the guiding spirit of the old Eisteddfod, last held in Massachusetts in 1996, who serves as our chief advisor and director emeritus. Many of the performing staff are appearing at Howard's suggestion, and they consider it a tribute to him that Jerry and NY Pinewoods are trying to keep this grand old festival going.
