Best wishes on your move. I've never been to Portland, maybe we can get up there on our 'northern tour', if it ever happens. Check out the folk scene for gigs. I hope the cats don't freak out. I moved once with a kitten, and she stayed on the back of my neck, claws engaged, for the drive. We survived however.

I was in Portland yesterday (lotta good that did ya!) -- but I may have some helping time available this weekend -- I'm only an hour and a half away. (And, uh, sorry. Playing shrink to four cats is enough of a handful right now.)

Hope the move goes smoothly and without any more than minor annoyances. At least the weather is pretty decent for the middle of winter. Make sure you've got toilet paper and lightbulbs packed on top!

Mary, Boston is about an hour from Portland so I hope you wil visit! Lots of great music here; a coice of sessiuns every night and the singer's club on Wednesday nights!

I am moving myself later this month (that house-buying thing I mentioned will happen, but not for a few months; my partners in purchasing are going to go live in London for the summer). I will be in a lovely 2 BR in Jamaica Plain (about twice as big as the place I have now) so you would be most welcome to visit.

good luck with the cats...that is always the toughest part. Readjusting the little buggers. They hate change.

My heartfelt sympathies for what is yet to come. Packing and lugging for two weeks = unpacking and lugging for two months. Do what I did.... unpack as you need it... four and half months now and still unpacking... when I need it.

Captain Morse picked me up at the airport tonight. Tomorrow, I move in. The NY movers were convinced that the truck won't make it up the mountains in the snow. I finally had to pull up a weather site to show them that there is no snow and I am not moving into the wilderness. Meantime the kitties are fascinated by the empty apartment. And little Fred discovered the scary wonders of mirrors.
Thank you all for your well wishes. I have a bottle of wine aND VANILLA BATH SALTS TO END THE DAY TOMORROW. hOPEFULLY i WILL BE ON MY OWN COMPUTER THEN.

You mentioned that you were looking for someone to take a cat? I work with a couple of cat-lovers from the Portland area, and although they seem to have a pretty ample feline family established, I can put you in touch with them if they could advise you about local resources etc..

It seems that you've got a pretty good human social support system already going for ye up in Portland town.

IMO,whenever you move you should always discover at least one box that hasn't been unpacked since the previous move. I know that's counter to all the professional advice about being organized but, we don't need no stinkin' advice.

We moved just after Christmas, and we've still got boxes everywhere, two rooms we can't even get in to (one of 'em has my instruments in a cupboard!), a garage literally full of stuff, and 75-sq-ft storage unit with the rest of the gear. I hope you have an easier time!

I am back on line. No phone yet. And barely a path through the living room but I am in. Yes - I found two boxes unopened from my previous move in 1979. And thanks, UJ about the cat lead. I am trying to get Alice to settle in. I can't part with her kitten. And she will be lost without him. The damn fool is still nursing at 6 months. Maybe I can get her to adjust...
Kendoll is off somewhere with another female. I knew the laryngitis was just a ploy to get out of helping me move! When I didn't buy it, he invented another excuse.
He did get me here before the movers arrived. Spaw won't believe this but our Captain has quite an entourage of "fans", all female and they are not electric or battery operated. Must be the dimples.

Glad you made it SINSULL. I think moving is exciting. I've done it 28 times in 29 years. A new beginning, new friends, new restaurants and pubs. Been here too long. I rearrange my furniture a lot to placate my gypsy nature. Never been to Maine, Emily vacationed there often growing up and loves it, so maybe we'll have to come see you sometime. All the best in settling in.

When I moved to Maine in 1972 I heard the story about the woman philanthropist who died in Kittery at the age of ninety-something. The newspaper obituary lauded her philanthropies, etc. but bemoaned the fact that, though she had been born in [York or Kittery], Maine, she wasn't a native. She had been CONCEIVED in Massachusetts.

I lived in Maine for the next 8 years (been residing in New Hampster ever since) and learned that it takes, I think, three generations before you're considered a native.
